Depending on the age and model of your opener,
you either set the code by matching the setting on the numbers on the back of the unit with the numbers inside the remote,
where the battery is,
or  you press and hold the red button on back of the unit until the light turns and flashes red, whereupon you press and hold the remote until the light turns green.
I believe that is the procedure.
