Some of the way the society is structured in America, the people are not close to one another.  We view things over the internet and television, and we forget the human aspect of it all.  It's a lack of empathy, and the ability to allow yourself to walk in another persons shoes.  People who are under-developed as full human beings, are slaves to their ego, and the perception of others.  This child-like need prevents them from a willingness to understand others, or to sympathize with them.
