I think LeBron is not a point guard because he is a really good point forward. Here is the problem with comparing players in the past to players today, they don't compare. No point guard will ever be Magic, and be that tall and have that court vision, no shooting guard will ever be Jordan, though Kobe is close. No small forward will ever be Bird, Dr. J, or LeBron and those players don't compare to each other. No power forward will be Karl Malone, or KG, or Moses Malone. No center will be Shaq, Russell, Wilt, Kareem and all those players were different from each other. Each great player is different and they bring something new to the game.
Now is LeBron closer to Magic's game, yes, they are cut from the same cloth. Both really tall passers who changed the game with their physical gifts. The difference, Magic actually played point guard on a fast break team and LeBron plays small forward on a team he's expected to be the lead scorer of. They just ended up with different roles on different teams with different ways of using their gifts. Kobe/Jordan comparisons are rare between two great players, mainly because both had the same head coach but even Phil used them differently. Phil used Jordan as his "center" as the person playing center was there just to clean up the triangle, while Kobe was used more as a slasher and spot shooter in the triangle. But the end was both being the main ball carrier, just Jordan caught the ball from Scottie and Kobe got the ball after Fisher dumped it into Gasol first. But Jordan/Kobe comparison is rare. LeBron learned the NBA under Mike Brown, Magic Johnson under Paul Westhead and later Pat Riley. Westhead was not afraid to use Magic in all positions, Brown mainly kept LeBron at SF. Under Riley, the Lakers became a huge fast break team, Brown on the other hand focused on defense so LeBron's offense was more of a find it yourself type deal. So both players came up very differently and thus it's hard to truly compare. The difference in the game then and now also has to be taken to consideration. Now the defenses are better and big men are mainly only for defense. So it becomes harder to score and there is more focus on half court games. On the flip side Magic played in a league that was more physical and you had many dominate big men, so the idea was to push the ball and out run everyone. So well many can see the similarities of their physical attributes and their natural game, they played different due to eras under different systems. Therefore you can't just say, this man had more assist or this man had more points.

There's nothing but nostalgia in saying that though. He's a pass first player and highly recognized as one of the greatest passers with an ABSURD IQ.
I'm not sitting here saying he's head and shoulders, night and day a better passer than Magic, but undoubtedly in the same conversation.
