i just ordered a copy of this after trying to track it down for a while. anyone else heard? there is hardly any 'urban' music available in this format and apparently this is a really great release. i can imagine it being very well suited to 5.1 and the mix being exciting given all the live instrumentation (2nd version of the album)

i'll see about hooking it up but i think the 5.1 side of it might be too confusing and/or large to rip to format like FLAC. if there is a high-res stereo (24-bit/96khz) version on there like with most DVD-A discs, that should be do-able

the 2nd version of this album is definitely a lot better. the 1st version is really lifeless in comparison, altho a couple of songs are perhaps more suited to the digital production or have interesting differences.

i have a DVD-A rip in 5.1 FLAC format but the files are massive and it seems the ripping procedures are complicated (analog recording methods, multiple stereo files combined into one). and this one 5.1 SACD rip in WMA Multi-channel which was really small considering, but not lossless quality. there's protection on DVD-A's that prevent you from getting a digital output from a PC in 24/96 5.1 mode, so i have to go through the analog connections just to play them properly.

think it's why DVD-A's are usually shared in raw .iso format. i've dl'ed a quite a few like this

both versions of the album are really interesting imo.The digital version of Rock Star is kind of bland whereas the rock one is astounding, but at the same time, Run To The Sun kind of loses it's edge with the live instrumentation, the rock version doesn't have the hidden Tape You interlude and so on...and yeah, good looks on tracking this down, should be a masterful listening experience

yeah if i had to say which ones are perhaps better on the earlier version or very decent alternatives it's 'Run To The Sun' and 'Lapdance'. 'Things Are Getting Better' is just shockingly bland and lifeless on the digital compared to the live one, like an entirely different track. 'Tape You' is also massively better on the live version, can live without the porno interlude

It's the new N.E.R.D. that reminded me of how great their first LP was. I'll drop the Digital and Live versions in the spot for anyone who wants a reminder or would like to compare again.
 
Methinks the 5.1 version will be incredible based on some of the comments on that surround sound forum and my appreciation of the live version

whenever im actually anticipating something in the post it never seems to come quickly.

all i gotta say is holy shit this is an absolutely phenomenal disc i might go as far as saying it's the best surround disc i've heard yet, even better than the talking heads just cause i'm a little more at home with the music to start with. but wow, just wow

it isn't that simple to do and the tracks would be 400mb+ each, but i might have a go. this disc is well worth the money if you only ever buy one surround sound album. absolutely outstanding. just crazy

wherever you can find it cheapest, is out of print/deleted. some amazon marketplace sellers have it:

the good thing is there is a DTS encoded version on it too, so anyone with a DVD player hooked up to a receiver (including ps3s) can enjoy 48khz/24-bit sound quality in 5.1. the layer for standard dvd-video players on these discs is normally only AC3 and limited to 16-bit, and the dvd-a specific part (only playable in dvd-a players and PCs) hasn't got full 96/24 quality on this release anyway, just the 48/24.
