What Topp Dogg was killed?
« on: December 28, 2002, 01:59:11 PM »
In an interview, I see Quik said this:

"Q: What surprises and disappointments have you experienced within the industry?

A: Being nominated for an American Music Award when I was 19-20 years old. Being able to affect (hip-hop) history the way we've affected it, like as far as sound quality goes. Raising the bar with sound quality, that was surprising. I didn't realize that people would really take to it the way that they did.

And, of course, the disappointments are when my friends get murdered in this game: everybody from Mausberg, Topp Dogg and Tupac. Those are the biggest disappointments, because it became personal and this is a hip-hop business. You got people out here with the mindset that when they see somebody else makin' a lot of money, they figure that it lessens their chances of makin' a lot of money. They don't understand that their money is theirs and you can get yours much the same way. I'm supposed to be pessimistic about that even though I'm normally an optimistic person. I can't believe people will ever not be jealous. I don't see that happenin'.

Q: Do tragedies like the murders of Tupac, the Notorious BIG and, most recently, Jam Master Jay, affect your working environment both personally and creatively?

A: Just losin' some of my mentors to violence sent me in a tailspin. Actually had me becoming an advocate to try to get people to calm down on the violence by doing records that could have ruined my career like "Rhythm-al-ism." ' I went as far as to wear a blue shirt on my album cover to pay tribute to my favorite soldier, Topp Dogg, you know cause he was from the Crips. I was showin' that I could be selfless and help them. And I guess in the hip-hop game being helpful only means that you become underrated to people like they don't really see all of the good things that you do for hip-hop because you don't take credit for it."

Who is this Topp Dogg who Quik is talkin about? Is he the one who was a Snoop Clone on Death Row's Chronic 2000?
