Dr. Dre Detox delay discussion (I know another Dre thread)
« on: April 26, 2011, 11:30:29 PM »
I was reading a blog on XXL mag about Dre. Of course we all know detox is in the works, the promo is there and the songs are out. What is Dre and Jimmy iovine waiting for? Lets be real a #1 hit single. They want dre to be the most talked about artist. They're not confident right now and their panicing because they can't find a song that will stick. People want to hear dre for what he is, personally i believe dre missed his chance at dropping detox in the 2006-2008 range. Its 2011 and the whole industry seems to be going young and cycling in new artists and getting rid of the old (TI, Game, Young Jeezy) with the exception of the mega stars like eminem, jay z, kanye and some others. All of these guys can blend into the new style. Dre should be in that group because of his icon status but he's not fitting in with the times.

article talks about skyler grey being horrible and played out by now

Why else would Dr. Dre – a 46 year-old black man from Compton who became famous for singing songs about weed and popping a cap in people’s asses – be recording an emo ballad that sounds like it may have begun its life as a song about needing a shot for chlamydia, which is apparently rampant in America’s high schools, if that show Skins is to be believed/ (Even the chorus to “Love the Way You Lie,” come to think of it, could be viewed as having to do with gonorrhea. Think about it.) Clearly, there’s a lot of money at stake here. It makes you wonder if “I Need a Doctor” was recorded since that song “Kush” hit the Internets and failed to set the world on fire, like Skylar Grey’s crotch. “Kush” is more along the lines of a classic Dr. Dre record, with its lyrics about smoking weed (which is apparently a good time), and its beat that sounds like an ever so slight variation on the every other Dr. Dre beat since 2001 (the album, released way the fuck back in 1999, i.e. two decades ago), many of which were colossal hits. The plan was probably to drop “Kush,” have it blow up, then drop the album in quick succession. Hence all of the press around the time “Kush” hit the Internets, including the cover of the dead tree version of XXL. Then when no one gave a shit they figured they’d bring in the team behind Eminem’s big hit from last year. When that doesn’t work, they should consider having Dr. Dre have some sort of adverse side effect to ‘roids. You know, to give his emo ballads more of an emotional resonance. Imagine if he really did need a doctor. That shit could be a movie! He could be treated by a doctor using a Beats by Dr. Dre stethoscope. Someone get Jimmy Iovine on the phone.

T.I. "Paper Trail" (one of the best of all time IMO), Kanye, Game, Nas, Luda, and T-Pain dominated 2008.  That would've probably been his year to give it a try.

2007, The Carter III by Wayne and 50 Before I Self Destruct...maybe but a lot of South music as a whole dominated the airwaves

2006, Out goes the Lil Jon era and in with more Southern snap....E-40, Snoop, Rick Ross debut, Young Jeezy doin his thing...The Game dropped a big one

You're probably right with what he would've had a chance 2006-2008. In many interviews it hinted that he was afraid to go head up against the Lil Jon era pre-2006.

The South pretty much ran the 2000's after the East died out in 2003

I guess this post just goes to the short-sightedness of people these days.  Despite facts, some continue to push the theme that INAD is not a hit and therefore was a flop.

If you look at the charts, that couldn't be any further from the truth.  In fact, INAD has continued to climb on the billboard charts and is receiving more airplay each week.  The fact that it had a huge spike initially and peaked at number 4 out of the gates, doesn't take anything away from it selling incredibly well and being in the top 40 in radio play. If you look at Diddy's 'Coming Home' that didn't do extremely well out of the gate, but slowly built up and became a hit.

I think INAD's longevity bodes well for the prospects of the album coming out in the summer/fall.

BTW does anyone have the latest digital sales numbers to see if INAD has reached 2MM yet?

yea it gets spins, but people see it as an eminem single! 2 verses from em half of the DJs are cutting the third verse just because theyre in a mix. This is not a hit until people say that Dr. Dre's single!

Why does this deserve its own thread? You're just saying what a bunch of other people have already said in all the other Detox threads.
