Run DMC obviously... they're pioneers, first rap album to go gold and platinum. first rap act to be played on MTV (technically MTV Europe had already started playing rap videos way before MTV "put Run DMC on the telly" but that doesn't really count). they are important as they helped legitimize and popularize rap music.then N.W.A., historically speaking, NWA's Straight outta Compton is a major turning point in Rap history

NWA.Run-DMC set the blueprint (along with Juice Crew, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five etc - better known as the Golden Era of Hip-hop), but NWA was the one that touched a bigger fanbase and resulted in the spawn of actual 'rap', not hip-hop.
