It's a 35 min. drive + the boat trip.. the helicopter argument is valid, but I figure it takes time to co-ordinate a SWAT-team fully geared up and heli'd up.

Who is "they"? Prisoners or mass murderers? Are we talking about exceptions or generally? I don't think that the average prisoner is treated too nicely.

 I also believe that people deserve equal treatment by law and there's no good way to draw a line between mass murderers, pedophiles etc. and other prisoners for stripping them off their rights. Those exeptions are always just the first step. And if I had to go to prison for something then please let it be Norway and not the US.

Well if you are a leftist who simply likes to treat bad people well and stuff, think about it more pragmatically: People might not care about going to prison at all because their outside life is worse to begin with. Your life might be much better, but there just are people who are fucked up and who have more comfort, social life and structure in a good prison. If the prisons are so good that going to prison is actually a seemingly logical decision for some people, then that is not a good thing. Prison should be something people should be willing to stay away from at all costs. If you can imagine having people shooting people and turning themselves in just to have a better life there is something seriously wrong with this.
