DJ Quik vs Dr. Dre
« on: February 06, 2003, 01:06:37 AM »
Dr. Dre was part of NWA and he dropped a few albums with them.  I actually don't own any of them, so I can't say whether they are classics or not.  I didn't get into rap until late 93/early 94 and I haven't caught up on the nwa albums.  But I got some songs and I know NWA was dope and had some classics.  Then Dre went on to make the chronic which is a classic.  My second favorite album ever.  Then he produced doggystyle which is a classic, and my favorite ever.  Then Dre was pretty much quiet for a few years.  I am not sure exactly what input he actually really had for dogg food.  So between 95-2000 dre didn't do much.  He had some hit songs like keep their heads ringin, natural born killaz, california love, can't c me.  He also put out that aftermath compilation which sucked.  Then he did the firm, which I never really checked out, but I heard sucked.  Then he dropped 2001 which is a great album, but not better than the chronic imo.  Then dre had his part in all the slim shady albums, which were pretty sucessful.

DJ Quik put out 6 albums and a greatest hits.  He also produced suga free's album, and was a big part of 2nd II None, AMG, Hi-C, Mausberg, Konnected Project, Darkside, and I could be missing some.  I own all his albums excet way 2 funky and greatest hit.  All his albums I have are completely solid, safe + sound and rhylymalism are def classics.

It seems like Dre is better at bringing up fresh new talent and making stars.  He is more popular and widely recognized.  He dropped 2 very classic solo albums, but it took him 10 years to make the second one.  Any way to cut to the chase, when it comes to straight producing skills I Don't know who has the straight edge.  Quik has a lot of classic material and lots of great beats, and it doesn't take him so long to make them.  Dre has some straight bangers that are just some of my favorite beats ever: gin and juice, shiznit, g thang, murder was the case rmx, deez nutz, shiznit, ain't no fun, gz and hustlaz, let me ride, keep their heads ringin, always into something, next episode, and more.  Pretty much every beat that I have heard of quiks is awesome, but he doesn't have as many that really stand out to me like those of Dre's that I listed.  but I have been listening to dre a lot longer so I could be biased and just haven't heard enough of quik.  what do u guys think?  who do u think is the better straight up producer.

i don't know man, its a hard choice, but i have to say Dj quik, he's been keepin it gangsta for a long time, dre's been on n off, Dj quik, the most underrated, fo sure. dj quik has been able to make nothin into somethin, alot longer than dre, so that why dj quik should be the undisputed.

ok.  To me, they are equal.  the best of both worlds.  Dre is more in to hard hitting bump in yo trunk style of production.  Dre is the man when it comes to that.

but Quik, he is more jazzy, more smooth. and he is just a better musicain all round. he uses more live instuments, which to me, IMO, is the greatest sound ever.   his "Quik's Grooves" are just sweet as honey.  his newest groove # 7 is just as good as it gets. IMO.  see, dre has never done shit like that, or not as much.  Dre is more hard hitting, like I said.  Quik is something to just relax to and kick back.  though Quik has had his fair share of Hard Hitters too.

So I think they are the same.  you can't have one with out the other.

Quik brought up Suga Free, AMG, Playa Hamm, Mausberg, 2nd II None...

Dre brought up Snoop and Eminem...

Quik does his own beats...rarely is it Co-Produced by anyone else....

Quik has more innovative beats...more universal...

Quik...

This is a very tough choice because i am a major fan of both artists/producers. I'm going to have to go with Dr. Dre. Its pretty clear that quik has more lyrical talent than dre on the mic in the present, however, i think dre has him beat with production. The production for quik's last album seemed half-hearted, and he clearly wasnt into it fully.

My 2 faves. Both in a league of thier own. But Dre introduced me to hip hop, and has more stand out tracks that I like. So I'll pick him. But quik is not far behind.

DJ Quik gets my vote for 3 reasons.
1) I love the fact he stays an underground West Coast artist, he represents that and is proud of it
2) I think musically he just does what he's feeling, never tries to cater to anybody. He's a true musician.
3) I like pretty much every song he ever put out or was involved in.

Dre is a real close second though.
