State of Westcoast Hiphop
« on: February 17, 2003, 06:32:19 PM »
Everybody here are Westcoast fans, that's why I need to know what's your opinions on the state of it. I will like to know how does the west get back on top and who could lead the way. I am not being bias but we all know that tha west has the most talent that is not exposed. Alot of the public don't know shit about good music. Who do we blame about the west not being commerical: radio stations, record labels, etc. Please let me know if you have the time.

The state of WestCoast hiphop is dead. Hopefully 2003 we'll come back. I blame it on Radio mostly cuz that's one of the reson why the west don't sell. Cali radio will play everything except West which is wrong. I don't blame Quik for retiring cuz the game is fucked up.

I couldn't agree with you more E-Stlye. Quik was a walking musical Einstein. It's a shame he retired cuz' he wasn't selling too well. I'm just glad he's still producin cuz that was always his best forte'.On the state of Westcoast Rap... I guess Knoc wasn't impressive enough to the radio to be played as viciously as Eminem. Shit muthafuck the radio execs. I guess if Sly Boogie don't bring back the West, than it's gonna have to go underground. I just hope the radio snaps out of their stupid addiction to wack commercial shit and starts playing Knoc, Sly and Amir when their new albums come out. If not, then I'ma snipe those execs from the Hollywood sign on the hill and take over Power 106. Give justice to the West cuz' it don't deserve to get kicked to the curb like it never existed. >:(

In my opinion, the West Coast fans arent ready to see the West Coast gets air play... When somebody like Dr Dre gets a lot of air play, they say he sells out ... and if somebody raps with a rapper from the East or the South, he gots no love for the Coast, and if they try to expand their sounds, they fell off, so the biggest problem of the West Coast is the fans, if the West Coast fans can live with the fact that 1992 was 11 years ago and that there will be NO other DoggyStyle , and no other Chronic, maybe the West Coast will be back on the map, or else, no, but its just an opinion

I believe the state of westcoast rap is not dead but is dying slowly...there are rappers that can spit raw gangsta sh*t but aren't shown love by their own west coast producers. People that I believe can bring the west back are YUKMOUTH, JAYO FELONY, CUBE (if he brings back anotha WSC album that stands up for the west again), BROTHA LYNCH HUNG, X-RAIDED, there are other ones but these are the ones that are at the top of my head... these people need the right push to bring the west back because like YUK said, all they need is top producers (like DRE, RIQ ROQ, BATTLECAT) to represent them better by hollerin' back and producin for these smaller artists. What I guess what i'm trying to stay is to unite The BAY AREA and L.A . again so we can continue to put the west back on the map. I remember when PAC was alive the best thing i remember seeing in his CALIFORNIA LOVE video (REMIX) was when i saw e-40 and the click all up in there....that was tight...so i believe we need more unity between the BAY and LA...That's just my opinion...

lol why do yall say the west is dead?...i guess yall dont check Diego or The Bay..or Sac...just cuz L.A. is bubbling with albums right now doesnt mean the west is dead...Dre gets love here...but i just dont like how hes leavin the west behind...all of his projects are non-west coast...Snoop is tryin reinvent himself...but it aint workin...Xzibit fucked up by portrayin a gangsta...that made his career do a 180...see Quik was the heart of the west for me...when he got no love for being ahead of his time that was wack...Quik and his camp are true west coast heads...they check the west first...then go on...right now the West is fine...nothin wrong with it...just cuz theres no major airplay doesnt mean that its dead...C-Bo been droppin heat in 02...Mitchy Slick is headin up the Diego movement right now...and hes not a bad candidate...Sly Boogie is really bringin up that underground sound right about now...and the bay is always droppin bangers...people just dont check enough...

Yeah, you're right, The West aint dead... Its just the Mainstream, I mean... a couple of years ago, the West used to take over the charts, now its all about that bubble-gum-bitch-for-the-hook shit, I got nothin against people like Nelly and P Diddy, but sometimes, I wanna see somebody like Ice Cube or Daz on tv more often...

Peace

in that aspect...yea...the west doesnt have representation on a major level aside from snoop....the thing with Daz and other cats is theyre too raw...see u got all these east coast "gangstas" who present gangster lyrics...but they still make music that is radio friendly...the west coast heads really dont make shit for the radio...cuz when u do that...u usually fail...

It's funny that everyone's talking about radio play. Surely this doesn't matter in terms of the quality of West Coast music? I understand that people would like to be able to turn the radio on and hear the new E-40 or Daz, but part of the beauty of this board for example is that new music can be discussed and heard here without any executives deciding if it's "commercially viable" or not?

I'm not overly concerned with sales and commercial success as representitive of quality. Quik is probably my all time favourite artist, but if he feels that not going double platinum should overshadow the joy he claims he has in making music... well, I guess I'll have to expect his opinion but maybe not agree with it.

So back to the topic, you can make the West rise again - just play the records. Fuck whether they're on the radio and TV - you ain't got to worry about paying ATL or whoevers' bills for 'em. Give the music the support you personally can.

West Coast Hip-Hop needs to understand what SELLS !! PAC is a perfect example: He made music for everyone - Period (the streets, the radio, women, etc.)

Dre is another example: He Keeps it GANGSTA but makes it radio friendly.

How do you think 50cent can come out and sell 872K in 4-days and right now
selling 485K (w/50% reporting).  He has the pulse of the street but bringing it to mainstream.

Either you stay Underground and Keep Grinding and be BROKE or You Bring it Mainstream and Stack them Chips.  If you're not in it for the MONEY Man then what you're here fo!!!

the west is dead becuse our shit is wack.  The problem is west cost only make songs for crips and 64's.  they need to understand that everybody's not a crip and everyone don't have a 64.  theyneed t make the music more universal.  W.C is a prime expample.  He had the hottest radio record out with "the streets" it was on both L.A radio stations but it got no play in the clubs, no play on the east coast no play anywhere else.  nobody wanna hear about chucks and blue rags.  the one thing that everybody has in common is the club.  if you have a club record than you can get your shit played everywhere.  You have to apeal to ladies somewhat cuz like it or not they are apart of hip-hop now.  quiks stuff is cool but his beats sometimes sound too RnBish and his hooks are wack.  and the fact that all the west coast stuff is put out by shitty labels doesnt help.  The reason 50 is selling is becuase he has club songs and street songs, and he's not a clown.  Look at shade shiest he is straight trash, Knoc-turnal had the perfect set up, he had exposure on a major club song got his face in the video and then killed himself with that missy song.  everybody thinks Crooked-I is gonna blow up, i just laugh at that.  Crooked-I, Rass Kass and all those other fools that just say a bunch of words will never blow.  so untill the west gets with the program concider us dead.
