Ball Don't Lie Candace Parker

Sunday night’s double-overtime game between the Tulsa Shock and Los Angeles Sparks seemed like a doozy, but with less than a minute left the Sparks’ Nneka Ogwumike seemed to have put it on ice. Ogwumike knocked in a breakaway lay-up with 44 seconds left to put the Sparks up three, getting fouled in the process. And because Ogwumike is an 84 percent free throw shooter, it seemed the right time to celebrate.

Unfortunately, the Sparks’ Candace Parker went about celebrating the exact wrong way.

Yes, that’s Parker bloodying Ogwumike after an accidental head-butt, a common instance at frat parties in the first month of the college school year, but not at all typical of a basketball game. I genuinely can’t recall ever seeing this happen at a pro contest.

Though Ogwumike was shooting at an 84 percent clip on the season, she missed the free throw, which allowed the Shock to tie it in the final seconds of the first OT and send it to a second overtime. Before you question Ogwumike’s resiliency, though, understand that the bandaged forward went on to score six straight baskets in the second overtime to give the Sparks a 90-88 win.

Six baskets in a row in overtime (that’s a ton, even for an NBA game), after having your teammate knock you woozy just before you attempt a game-sealing free throw. That’s a pretty sound comeback, Nneka Ogwumike.

True to her former MVP-form, Parker made up for her gaffe and Ogwumike’s gash by putting the game away with a driving lay-up with 5.7 seconds left in the win.
