How old are you exactly? Magic stopped playing in 90-91. I don't think you're my age, but I could be wrong. I'm guessing you were born 87 or so. I hardly call being a fan of someone at the age of 2 or 3 constitutes as "following." Unless, of course, you're older. You seem to be more exception, than rule. I just go by people I know. Friends. Family. So on. My brother was born 1980. He loved Magic and when Magic retired it was Malone. Many of my older buddies who were born in 81-83 are all Jordan fans. What I think you mean to say is: People who got into Basketball in the late 90's until about the mid 2000's relate to Kobe, Duncan, Garnett and J.Kidd. People who got into Basketball from the mid 2000's until about the next few years will relate to LeBron, Melo, Wade, Durant etc.

And C-Webb fits your bill of star rookie. Think about it. He had a great High School career and was the National Player of the Year. In College, he was apart of one of the most talked about teams ever, the Fab 5. They had plenty of hype, plenty of attention. He only spent 2 years in College, but both years he took his team to the Championship Game. He was the number 1 pick after that.

I watched C-Webb his entire career. I remember watching him in College, I watched him enter the NBA. 10 years later, I didn't relate anymore to him than I did before. I watched him grow into a real leader on the Kings. But, it didn't change a thing. He wasn't the best when I started following.

That's why your point is obviously a weak argument.

I was born 84. My favorite Pro-Wrestler was Hulk Hogan. Why? Because I started watching Wrestling when he was on top. You know who I hated? Shawn Michaels. Why? Because I thought the Rockers were a shitty Tag Team and I never bought into his character. But, ask someone who got into Wrestling in the early to mid 90s, they'll tell you Shawn Michaels was their guy.

My favorite players in Baseball were virtually any mix of Mark McGwire, Kirk Gibson, Jose Canseco, Ricky Henderson or Orel Hershiser. Why? Being from California was a major factor and because in and around 88 was when I started playing Tee-Ball and going to Dodger games with my team and my dad (or A's games with family in the Bay). The A's and Dodgers played in the Series that year. Why wasn't I into guys like Dave Justice, Sandy Alomar or Jeff Bagwell  (all amazing players, but not guys that I could say are my favorite)? Because they just weren't the best or playing for the best when they came into the league.


In Football, obviously being in California I had a lot of choices. Being from L.A., the obvious choices were the Rams who were terrible and the Raiders who my dad taught me to hate. Branching out, closest to me was the Chargers. I remember my dad listening to Mighty 690 (which was the a sports Radio station in San Diego that we would get up here in L.A.). But, i couldn't get into them. That left the Niners. I had obviously heard about and saw Montana, but it wasn't until I really was able to follow the game that I got into the Niners. Watching Young and Rice with Ricky Watters on Offense and Hanks and Norton on Defense left an impression on me. Those were my favorite players. Not guys like Marshall Faulk or Jerome Bettis.

I say all that to say this: Everyone is different and will find one thing or another to relate to a person, place or thing. Typically, when it comes to being a fan of something, the person will relate to what is popular, because it's easier to understand.
