MLB Report: Johnny Peralta Signed With St. Louis Cardinals

Anyway, word came out a few days ago that Peralta signed a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals who were looking to add a shortstop who can actually hit.
Although nothing's been confirmed it's rumored that the deal is a 4 year $52 million deal.

Now the Cardinals have a shortstop whose a good hitter but bad infielder and a shortstop whose a bad hitter but a good infielder. And the public is totally going bonkers over how a steroid user got a big contract. Idiots.
Just wait until Nelson Cruz signs a big deal with somebody ::).

It's a better bargain than the 5 year 75 million deal Peralta was demanding, but I did not think Cards would be the team to give him a contract.

But the only other quality free agent SS was Stephen Drew, and because Sox gave him the qualifying offer, Sox would've gotten Cards' draft pick. And we all know how much Cards value their draft picks. Which leads to me to believe that this was the sole reason they went after Peralta.

Now that's a very good point and probably explains why Peralta was asking so much in the first place. Using positional scarcity and not having draft pick compensation hanging around his neck.

And yeah I don't think anybody was thinking the Cardinals were going to sign him but then again, perhaps they know something about their inhouse infielders that the rest of us don't. Plus they were going to lose some offense if Beltran leaves and Taravas (or whoever they have in the outfield) doesn't make immediate impact, so I guess this fills that void to a certain degree.

I have no idea what you're smoking but I'd love to have some.

We've already got a shortstop whose a good hitter but a terrible infielder, two of them actually (old man Jeter and the infield catastrophe himself, Nunez). That's why the Yankees got Brendan Ryan to balance it out.
