This is VERY unlike Billy Beane to pick up a player frequently identified with the term "overpaid." I know he gave up jack shit to pick him up, but still.

Well the A's do/did need a closer with Balfour's departure (or at least what looks like his departure) so from that perspective this make sense.

On a sidenote the Billy Beane did surprise me though when it was announced a few moments ago that the A's had traded top prospect Michael Choice to the Rangers, for Craig Gentry no less. Today is not a slow news day 8).

I don't know much about Michael Choice, but Gentry is an awesome pick-up imo. He has zero slugging power but is good offensively outside of that, and is excellent in the field.

I wonder what the hell Texas is thinking though, since they are about to be in a shortage in the outfield. Maybe they plan on signing Beltran or Choo or something.

I have no idea how a guy who had zero slugging power when he was playing in Arlington (one of the most hitter friendly parks) is a good thing, but then again I haven't seen enough Gentry and he was probably a 4th outfielder who saw limited action I'm guessing.

As for Choice I've heard his name being thrown out a lot in various prospect circles.

On a sidenote the A's also did one other transaction with one of their California based teams. As they traded Seth Smith for Luke Gregerson from the Padres.
