I've heard the term. Just like Clipper Nation, Heat Nation, Cowboy Nation, Packer Nation, Dodger Nation, and Red Sox Nation. I think the Lakers deserve something more creative ans stronger than just a Nation. The Raiders are a Nation, and when Raider Nation was born, it made sense. The Lakers deserve better than some old Raider nickname for their fans.

Check the Raider thread in G Spot. I posted the evidence there. Back in 1983 when they moved to LA and people traveled to see them from the Bay. They also had many games against the Chargers and other teams when there were more Raider fans. So the Nation came from having a travelling fan base. The Red Sox copied in 1986 when they made their run. But the Raiders started the Nation thing. Others copied in the early 2000's after the Raiders run and thenuse of Raider Nation on everything.
