The "Triggerman" or "Drag Rap" beat.

In 1986 a small group out of Queens NY called The Showboys recorded a song called "Drag Rap (Trigger Man), that was a send up to the television show "Dragnet" theme. It didn't really blow up anywhere in New York or the east coast in general.

In New Orleans, it randomly made it's way in to a dance mix and people loved it. It started to get sampled here and there until it became a recognizable element of New Orleans. It's popularity snowballed and became the backbone of Bounce Music, a hybrid genre of rap, dance and traditional southern call and response songs. As bounce music gained more visibility the Drag Rap sample's popularity grew in Memphis and other cities in the south.

Sections of Drag Rap is now woven in to hundreds, if not thousands of songs across the south and is one of the most underrated samples in hip hop history.
A few examples.

Cocaine Blunts did an interview with Mannie Fresh about the sample which I thought was pretty interesting.

Fresh does a good job of breaking down it's history.
