Why are ball-handlers now allowed to use off hand to push off?

I kind of wondered this, because I was always taught this was a foul growing up.  I know Jordan did it some, but now it is the status quo.  Every player, especially the star players like Lebron are allowed to use their off hand to just push people off of them to free themselves up for a shot and this is never called.

The other one I don't get is that as long as Lebron is back in he is allowed to use full force to go backwards into the defender all the way to the goal.  This also was taught to be a foul growing up but is not called now in the NBA.   If a player was going forward, face first it would definitely be called, but now it's like as long as the back is turned, he can back in as hard as he wants and it's not a foul?


...has anybody else noticed this, and am I right that these are indeed fouls that are just not called anymore in the NBA?

I think these unofficial rules stayed with Jordan as they never called offensive fouls inn him ever. From there as stars became bigger and more physical, it became more obvious. Starting with Shaq and especially with LeBron, stars just never got fouls called on them. Shaq didn't push off though, but other physical stars did, and they got away with it too.

Yeah... I did think Shaq sometimes backed straight in just running over guys and sometimes he would get away with it... but compared to what I see guys like Lebron doing now I would say Shaq was playing within the rules.

...According to the rules, a charge is when the defensive player is in a set position, the defensive player has a right to that position and the offensive player can not just go into him and move him backwards—however the way it is called now as long as the offensive player has his back turned its as if he has free license to back in as hard as he wants whenever he wants and just run over a defensive man in a set position.

only Lebron is allowed because he is the leagues golden child. it's even a foul on the opposing team half the time.
