Crooked I Interview
World Wide Connected sat down with Crooked I, and here's what we talked about.
Jayare[WWC]: Where did you grow up and what was it like?
Crooked I: Grew up all over the place, man. Borned in L.A, moved to Long Beach when I was a youngster. After a while I moved to Vegas, moved to Portland, moved to Texas, moved to Oklahoma, moved to Philly. So I've been all over the place you know what i'm saying. And It was a cool experience cuz everywhere I went, you know, we lived in the ghetto of that perticular town. So I got the understanding that the world is a ghetto, and people are alike no matter where you go. When I was 16 I moved back to Long Beach, but my own apartment and I've been here ever since. But yeah, I traveled alot, man, and it was a cool thing and I think that that's what makes my rap-style a little more versital than the average west coast cat.
Jayare[WWC]: Did you take flow and lyrical content from where you went?
Crooked I: Well you know everywhere you went you're gonna kinda adapt. Everywhere I went I represented the big west, the west every time you know what im sayin. No matter where I went they knew and understood it was the west coast. And you know, it was just different types of things. Like on the west coast there would be like me and my homeys sitting around the on the quorner, we kickin raps like going to the swap meat buying t-shirts, and poker stacks and shit like that, you know what I'm saying? When I was on the east we're on the basketball court batteling each other trying to see who'll come up with the most destructable terms. So it's like, you know, it was a difference definitely but it was cool cuz it made my fit-game increase.
Jayare[WWC]: Who or what inspired you to get into Hip-Hop and who/what inspires you today?
Crooked I: Maan, rappers delight. First time when I heard that I was too young to even know what the hell I was listening to. Ever since then I've been dedicated. I've been doing it. No matter what I'm been doing in my life I've always had hiphop in my life since that day.
Jayare[WWC]: How does a typical day look for you?
Crooked I: Aight. First and foremost I'll hit the swapmeat and I'll buy 30 white t-shirts. So I'll be straight for the month, ya feel me?
Then, I'mma hit the shoe store and i'mma pick up either some air force one's or imma pick up some quortez nikeys. Then, after that, I'mma go get my car washed, ya know what im sayin. Then, I'mma jump in traffic, get on my telephone and figure out wich dime peace i'mma be hollering at right now.
Jayare[WWC]: Yeah I'm sure there's alot of them looking for Crooked I now huh?
Crooked I: You feel me! I'm there! I'mma tell you man, I could get into alot of trouble right now. They're out there...
Crooked I: And then of course I go to the studio, and after a few hours of freedom on the streets, lockin myself in that studio for like 13 hours.
Jayare[WWC]: Bring them bangers out?
Crooked I: Gotta do it!
Jayare[WWC]: What kinda music do you listen to except rap? (if any)
Crooked I: Besides from rap I listen to classical music. You know in L.A we got a classical station called "King Mozart". I bang that you know. Cuz thats like some music to think to, ya know what im sayin. And there ain't no vocals, and not a whole lot of people guestin a whole lot of problems. It's alot of music and instrumentation that you can kinda ride to. And you know, I call it "Music to think to". So I bang the classical. And then I probably switch up to the Oldie station and bang all them songs i remembered my mother playing.
Jayare[WWC]: The dramatics huh?
Crooked I: You feel me!
Jayare[WWC]: You said before that Jim Gettum was killing people on the piano. Do you try to bring that into your music?
Crooked I: Fo sho! I try to bring that out on the music, cuz to me, that's the good thing about hiphop. Allot of different music genres are tryng to follow us right now. But we are the originators of being able to incorporate every other music into our music, ya know what I mean? We can play classical and incorporate that, bam! We can sample Jazz, we can sample RnB, we can sample Rock’n’Roll. We can incorporate anything into hiphop, ya know what im sayin? And, for years we were the only ones doing it. Now you see RnB people incorporating Hiphop into their shit, or crossing over to this and that. But, that’s the thing so you know… whatever inspires me I incorporate it into my music, ya know?
Jayare[WWC]: You know, we have to ask this question… What was your relationship with Daz and the DPG back when he first recorded and how did you hook up with them?
Crooked I: Uhm well you know being from Long Beack, you know, I always knew those cats. But I always been my own independent dude. When I was even like 15 to 16, you know, or 17, I was an independent guy, man. I couldn’t just get down with you cuz you was on tv and on videos, ya know what I’m sayin? I had to push my own line. But I knew those dudes, we crossed paths often in Long Beach. So a couple of years into me knowing them we started doing projects together like the 19th street compilation, the straight outta cali compilation, ya know, we started working with different artists and working with eachother so… that’s how I developed a relationship with them dudes, you know? And we had a cool relationship back then. It was all gravy.
Jayare[WWC]: When did ya'll start working on the soundtrack for "Dysfunctional family"?
Crooked I: I can’t remember exactly when because you know how we do it man… I know it didn’t take long at all. It didn’t take long at all. It’s like we was just in there banging projects, like... We was working on my album. We was doing some Eastwood, we was doing some NINA, we was doing some Pac remixes… we was doing so much stuff…you know, some Danny Boy. And then the soundtrack fell in our lap so we just like “Ok let’s knock this out real quick”. I can’t remember the date but we knocked it out pretty quick.
Jayare[WWC]: How was it like working with comedian Eddie Griffin?
Crooked I: Well you know… Eddie is a funny dude, man. He had the whole studio buzzin up. He come in there man and you know it was kinda hard to work some times cuz we was just sitting around dying laughing at his crazy ass. Walkin the room and shit and killin the whole session with comedy.
Jayare[WWC]: When is your solo album set to be released?
Crooked I: This summer, man. This summer got to be mine, period. You know what im sayin? This summer has to be mine, man. I’m working too hard and I’ve worked too hard. This is my summer, man. We’re dropping it this summer. I don’t know exactly when, but when it’s hot outside there’s gonna be a reason. That bad guy album is gonna be on the streets.
Jayare[WWC]: Will your solo album and the soundtrack have the same style and sound or will they be different?
Crooked I: Nah, it will have a different sound style, you know becuz… the soundtrack is a reflection of many different people. The solo album is gonna be a reflection of me. So we gonna travel tho. From the intro to the outro I want you to feel like you’re on a roller coaster.
Jayare[WWC]: How do you feel about your album being pushed back so much?
Crooked I: Ah, man, I’m not even trippin. I’m glad that it did because a lot of things have happened between the time it was supposed to come out, and now… that need to be incorporated into the music, ya know what I mean? And a lot of shit’s going on, I mean… not just hiphop shit but you know, wars, you know what I’m saying, L.A was the murder capital of America, you know. In 2002. So it’s a lot of things going on that I had to go ahead and drop some more things on the album that… And I’m glad it kinda got pushed back like that cuz it gave me the opportunity to spit some more shit that really was missin.
Jayare[WWC]: Ok, so then it’s save to say that Crooked I isn’t pissed off about it being pushed back a lot, right?
Crooked I: Nah! Never that, you know! Never that! I mean, a lot of young artists… we gotta understand one thing. Timing is everything, ya know what im sayin? And for a debut artists such as myself, on a label of the magnitude that Death Row is, timing is everything! You just gotta, you know, row with the flow, man. A lot of dudes like to jump ship when they don’t get what they think they need to be getting. But sometimes when you jump ship, and then you find out you forgot how to swim. So you know… we definitely happy.
Jayare[WWC]: How did ya'll come up with the name "Say Hi To The Bad Guy"?
Crooked I: The inspiration was man… everybody knows that… Ok, Crooked I’s coming out. One of my main objectives is to raise the bar and the skill standard on the west coast. I’m sick of dudes from the west coast tryin to go under the radar with they skill level, ya know what im sayin? Where, as, we’re supposed to be consumers like “yeah this dude can rap”. This dude can’t rap! Ya know what im sayin? Check his rhymes! Analyze this guy! This dude’s wack! So I wanna put the skill levels up, I wanna raise the bar. And that’s gonna piss people off on the coast cuz I’m gonna be talking about them. This is my coast and I love the West Coast! And I love the people in the streets from the West Coast. But.. you know that’s gonna piss some people off, me on TV talin about “yea cuz you know there’s a lot of wack dudes out west”. They’re gonna be “hahaaa they’re egos”. So I’m the bad guy to them. Say Hi!
Jayare[WWC]: You definitely got the skills man. You can set the bar high enough for other people not to catch up to you, man. Cuz a lot of people are saying you’re the best right now.
Crooked I: Ahaa!
Heey, I love that man! You know why? Cuz I say this all the time: When I’m in the bathroom at 4 in the morning with my ink pen. When I’m in there until 6 in the morning trying to put together something, man. I love it when people appreciate it, cuz that’s what I do it for.
Jayare[WWC]: What’s the average time it takes you to write down a whole song?
Crooked I: Hmm, it depends man. Some things I take my time with. Some things I might just come up with right there on the spot. They play the beat, I come up with something in 15 minutes. I’ve been known to write a song in 15 minutes and lay it in 10 minutes. I’ve been known for that. But you see I’m not in a rush, ya know what I mean?. But I can do that and it will be a quality song. But I’m not in a rush cuz once you put a song on a CD it’s forever. A lot of dudes wanna be in a rush to try to say that they’re so impeckable skilled that they can do a song in 5 minutes, man, fuck that. It’s forever, so I wanna take my time and I want the consumer to feel me when they hear it, ya know what I mean?
Jayare[WWC]: What’s the process of you writing a song?
Crooked I: Well, you know, nowdays to be honest. I make up songs, right, I make the songs up on the way to the session. Like… I may have the instrumental and they’ll be like “ok we got a session tomorrow”. So on my way to the session, coming from Long Beach, I’m usually driving far to Hollywood somewhere, and I make up the songs by the time I get there and I spot it.
Jayare[WWC]: Cuz we heard in an interview that you carry a tape-recorder with you, right?
Crooked I: Exactly! I carry a tape-recorder with me because... you know one of the things that these cats need to understand out there is that the idea is one of the most valuable things in the world. And we can’t just let ideas fly around without catching them, ya know what im sayin? So I keep that tape recorder cuz I might be in traffic and something inspire me to come up with something, I’m gonna get it, believe me!
Jayare[WWC]: Who's going to be on the album as far as guests?
Crooked I: That’s still kinda under the wraps, ya know what im sayin. But just know that you gonna have a east coast presence, a west coast presence, and a south presence cuz we’re really into tieing all this shit together.
Jayare[WWC]: Bringing people together, huh?
Crooked I: Yeah, let’s bring this thing together, man!
Jayare[WWC]: Make money, huh?
Crooked I: Definitely!
Jayare[WWC]: Who's in the tripple 7 productions team?
Crooked I: Oh you know what? We dead at that. That’s dead.
Jayare[WWC]: Oh that’s dead?
Crooked I: Yeah that’s dead, ya know what I mean? I got some things coming in the future. I got my group, the Untouchables. And we’re gonna have some things coming in the future. But, triple 7, we dead at that. That was Jim Gettum, Me, and Darren Vegas. But we just all put it up under the Death Row umbrella.
Jayare[WWC]: It’s pretty much the Tha Row heavy hitters, huh?
Crooked I: Exactly!
Jayare[WWC]: Do you produce a lot by any chance?
Crooked I: Yeah fo sho! Cuz you know I got a whole vision. I’m not one of those dudes who just go in there beatin rap most of the time. I usually have a vision for song like… “I want this to sound like this, I want that to happen, I want this to sound like this”, and then I go in there and collaborate.
Jayare[WWC]: Would you say you changed your style after you joined with Death Row?
Crooked I: Naah!
Jayare[WWC]: Not at all?
Crooked I: Naah. Cuz if you go back, and you check me out on other things before I was even on Death Row… I was still talking about the same ghetto shit, man.
Jayare[WWC]: We’ve been hearing about a mixtape that will be out for a lot of people to get online. When will that be out?
Crooked I: Well, we finished it last night so… we’re gonna get the artwork and then find out how we gonna dublicate it cuz we’ll also put it out on the streets, too. So we’re gonna put it on the net, and then we’re just gonna have the promotion teams hand them out on the streets, just hand them to the highschools and the colleges… So it should be no less than a week from now.
Jayare[WWC]: Ok, there’s a big buzz for that mixtape already and it’s not even out yet. That’s a good sign.
Crooked I: Wow. That’s a really good sign!
Jayare[WWC]: Was the material for it recorded recently or did you use older stuff?
Crooked I: Ah, that’s just now. I just did it… We sat down for 3 days and came up with 6-7 songs, and freestyles, and uhm… you know… we just did it man! Last week. No doubt, it’s gonna be brand new shit, man! I want everybody to pick it up! If they see it, bang it! because there’s a lot of people waiting on my album so I wanted put out something free out there… you know, that’s good lookin that you’re waitin on your boy, and you’re patient, so here’s some free shit for ya, man.
Jayare[WWC]: Is it a mixtape of 100% Crooked I or will the other Death Row inmates be on there too?
Crooked I: 100% young Crooked. Because, you know… Sometimes when I’m just rollin around man I come up with these ideas and before I even get the chance to hit somebody from the label I done already put out 6 or 7 things, ya know what I’m sayin? Cuz I just got so much to get out, man. So you know, we’re gonna do a volume two featuring everybody on Tha Row, and I’m not even gonna be too much in it. I’m just gonna host it, ya know what I mean? And let the other dudes do their thing. And then… volume 3, we just gonna keep the mixtape thing keep coming, man. To keep promoting. Keep the consumers with material in them hands. So there’ll be one with Tha Row in there.
Jayare[WWC]: Do you plan to be on any other artists albums?
Crooked I: Yeah. A lot of people come at me, man. A lot of people come at me. I’m just tryin to put this album out, ya know? And push it. And then, after that, blatch out, get down with people. Cuz you know, I’m a cool cat. I can get down with a lot people. You’d be surprised with the relationships I got in the industry. So you know… we gonna make it happen.
Jayare[WWC]: Is there any possibility you can name some of those people?
Crooked I: Well, you know, it’s a lot of people. I don’t wanna put them out there just yet. They probably got a politic on their lil thing…
Jayare[WWC]: Yeah I guess we’ll hear it when it drops.
Crooked I: Yeah but before it drops. We’ll be lettin you know, ya know what im sayin?
Jayare[WWC]: Who's in the U-Gang?
Crooked I: That’s Drimitious Capone, Julius Lucciano, that’s Kenny Siegel, that’s Andrew DiNero, and that’s me. And all of them is my three little brothers and my steph brother. So it’s a family organized rap syndicate!
Jayare[WWC]: Will they appear on your album?
Crooked I: Naah, they didn’t touch down, ya know? I just fooled em out recently, to come live with me. Cuz they were out of state for a while. So I just flew them out here and they stay with me now. And we started working on a project.
Jayare[WWC]: So the what’s the label called now? Death Row, Tha Row or Death Row is back?
Crooked I: Maan, it’s all of that! Because it’s Death Row, and it’s always been Tha Row, as an abbreviation. And everybody need to know that we back!
Jayare[WWC]: So do ya’ll have chains for all of them or what?
Crooked I: Yeah man! I try to keep up with it, ya know? Ya know what I’m sayin I’m not gonna turn down a chance to get some new jewlery so you know… you name it whatever and I’m gonna ice it!
Jayare[WWC]: Would you want Death Row and the DPG camp to make peace and work together?
Crooked I: Well you know. I feel like you know… a lot of things need to be done. I don’t know where peoples heads are no more. I know a lot of them cats. A lot of decision making, a lot of you know… it’s puzzling to me, you know. I don’t even know where they heads at. I don’t even know if that’s possible, for it to be squashed. Every day, there’s some new shit.
Jayare[WWC]: Yeah, man. Hopefully you can just look past that and make some good music.
Crooked I: Well you know, to me… since I’m a peaceful cat… it’s always cool to have peace. I would never not have peace. But, it’s always a time for war too. And that’s where we at. And if they wanna bring it, they better bring it for real. Not all that internet cyber gang bangin.
Jayare[WWC]: Originally battle rap was on the underground level. Nowdays it seems like it’s on a mainstream level…
Crooked I: You know what I’m saying, That’s how it goes down. Since KRS-1 and Shane. Since LL and Kool Mo Dee. That’s the way it’s goin down. I like the music, ya know what im sayin? You make the best music by being angry at em.. sometime that bring your best music also. I’m digging it, ya know. I’m sittin here watching like, ok, round one, who’s winning this round? Who’s winning that round? If it stays on wax, that’s beautiful! But you know, usually when you deal with a California dude tho from the west coast, it may not stay on wax.
Jayare[WWC]: Do you feel this mainstream batteling has gotten out of control tho?
Crooked I: It’s going mainstream, and it’s not all that bad. But the thing is that the media feeds in to it… So the thing is that it can be underground, but the interviewers is gonna ask you about it, you know. It’s gonna blow up anyway. But you know it’s cool… and that happens to be one of my specialties. So I’m happy that it’s mainstream, cuz as soon as anybody’s saying something about me it’s gonna be real…
Jayare[WWC]: It’s a wrap, huh?
Crooked I: You feel me! Cuz man! I’m so relentless, man! I can’t stop until the job is done! So you gonna see…
Jayare[WWC]: I don’t think anybody wanna mess with Crooked I, you know what I mean?
Crooked I: Maan, I think they do, because… you know, sometimes you surround yourself with “yes-men” who pump you up to make you think you can achieve something. You know what I mean? So… I don’t care! I mean I welcome it! This is what I do, man! That’s what I do, ya know what im saying? That’s what I’ve done since I was a kid! So I love that, c’mon! ya know… So bring what you gotta bring, but come heavily armed, cuz we comin with so much artillery it ain’t even a game!
Jayare[WWC]: What are your thoughts on the Shady Records vs. Murder INC situation?
Crooked I: My thoughts man… is... Ja Rule… he supprised even me! With that last one… I was like wow!
Jayare[WWC]: Yeah no one thought he had it in him anymore, ya know?
Crooked I: Ya know what I’m sayin! And he kinda went over there and tried to take a shit on somebody, ya know what I’m sayin?!
Jayare[WWC]: Yeah and he did it all by himself, too.
Crooked I: All by himself! So when they lined up all three of them, on a Pac beat which they had no business rockin, really. When they lined up on that, I wasn’t impressed.
Jayare[WWC]: Do you plan to get involved with it if you haven't already?
Crooked I: Nah, I’m just a spectator. If they pull me in, then we can get down. But I’m just a spectator. I’m just watching it go back and forth, back and forth. So I’m just spectatin, but nah I wasn’t impressed by the one on the Pac one. I’ve heard better out of those guys on that label and camp, ya know what I mean?
Jayare[WWC]: There's rumors about you being on the reix for "Snitch Nigga". Is there any truth in that?
Crooked I: Naah, that’s just a rumor. I’ve been approached about it but ain’t nothing official.
Jayare[WWC]: Who are currently signed to Death Row?
Crooked I: Virginya Slim, Gail Gotti. Two females who make up the group Redbone. We got Danny Boy who came back. We got Kurupt of course. We got Eastwood, we got Spider. And uhm… we got… Michel’le… And we got Young Crooked, tha bad guy… that’s me.
Jayare[WWC]: There's been talks about a Rapalot/Tha Row/Murder INC project. What's up with that and will you be a part of it?
Crooked I: Yeah fo sho! Whatever goes down, ya know what I’m sayin, that Tha Row is officially involved in I’m gonna be a part of, no doubt. You know I know they’ve been talking about making some big things happen, and we gonna see what they come up with. They’re just sittin at the table now… we gonna see what they come up with. But whatever it is, I’m gonna be involved, no doubt!
Jayare[WWC]: A lot of people felt that song “Gangsta rap” you made with Treach and Scarface. Is there any chance you’ll be working with Scarface again any time soon?
Crooked I: Yeah! There’s a big chance. There’s a really big chance!
Jayare[WWC]: A lot of people is wondering if you use to visit the official website and check out the forum?
Crooked I: Yeah! I go to the official website, ya know what I’m sayin? There be a lot of haters on that site, too. They be up there hatin, you know. I think there’s a few doghouse cats tryin to you know… tryin to infiltrate, you know what im sayin! But it’s ok cuz I know we got some Death Row rydaz riding on their forums and chat forums and all that shit, ya know! So it’s all good
Jayare[WWC]: How would you describe the state of rap today?
Crooked I: Big! Hiphop is big, ya kow what im sayin? It influences fashion, it influences cinema, ya know what I mean? It’s as big as it’s ever been. But! On the west coast… it’s smaller than it’s ever been. You ain’t seen a brand new cat in 10 years… emerged to a higher level in the game. You haven’t seen a new face in 10 years, and that’s a shame.
Jayare[WWC]: Gotta make way for the new cats, huh?
Crooked I: You got to! You know and that’s my while mission! Not just cats from Death Row, new cats from the west period! It’s where I’m from, man, and I love this place! I bleed California!
Jayare[WWC]: What do you think about the Rass Kass situation?
Crooked I: Oh man! I don’t know… I got this information here and there. You know, I heard he was having problems with his label and he was supposed to be on the run or something. I don’t know. You know, I like Rass Kass, Me and him have done like a couple of songs in the past. I don’t know if any of the songs I’ve ever done with him are on the internet. I might have to leak some of that shit too! I got em right now in the archives.. so look for the Rass Kass and Crooked I leak! Leaked by ME, ya know what I’m sayin?
Jayare[WWC]: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Crooked I: 5 years? Maan, I just see myself lookin at a body of work and… hopefully being proud of what I laid down and… 5 years, that’s how long I’m tryin to make to be mentioned as one of the top 5 of who ever did it. Not only on the West, on the East too. That’s the mission.
Jayare[WWC]: I wish the best for you.
Crooked I: That’s good lookin, man!

Jayare[WWC]: George Bush
Crooked I: George “Bully” Bush?
Jayare[WWC]: The internet
Crooked I: Good and bad.
Jayare[WWC]: Good and bad?
Crooked I: It’s good, you know. But it’s bad when you download everything it and not purchasing anything. I’m not mad if you download the whole joint. But if you’re a true fan and liked what you downloaded, support your boy and go to the store and pick it up. So that I can generate enough album sales to come back with a new album for you to download.
Jayare[WWC]: Yeah that’s a thing people don’t understand. If they download the music and don’t support the artist that artist might not drop their shit again.
Crooked I: Exactly! No more shit! To download.
Jayare[WWC]: R. Kelly
Crooked I: Being successful no matter what.
Jayare[WWC]: No shit huh?
Crooked I: Yeah! That’s crazy! Well you know what tho? I ain’t mad at him if Romey Sellaski can get a fucking award.
Jayare[WWC]: Ok thank you so much for conducting this interview with us.
Crooked I: Ah, man I wanna thank ya’ll for having me, ya know!
Jayare[WWC]: Is there anything else you would like to say to the fans or the haters or whatever out there before we wrap this up?
Crooked I: Yeah! All you haters, ya’ll gonna be addressed at the album! All the fans, scoop that up and support your boy, even if you’re downloading the shit out of it. Still purchase at least one copy and tell your homeboy it’s hot and let them purchase it. And try to come back for round two. Momma’s boy, the whole story, that’s the second album!
Crooked I dropping a freestyle.
Jayare[WWC]: Ok let’s finish this off, let’s see… All you mutts!
Crooked I: Get off our nutts!
Chuuch!

good to here Crooked I's starting to get some hype. Hopefully the mix tape will get him some hype like 50 got by doin his shit
To me Crooked I has a little something for all kind of raps fans, he can slow it down & rap to an RNB song, he can speed it up West Coast style, & he can rhyme like the East Coast style
Hopefully people will get to hear that & wanna buy his shit
Dont trip on Crook just coz he down with Suge & he dissing Snoop. The man is a good hard working guy at heart & deserves to blow up. One of my favorite rappers hearing from his guess appearances unreleased shit & free styles. I personally cant wait for it.
I havent heard the soundtrack yet i just hope the new young gun production talent they got doing his shit is good, coz without good production he wont go no where. Man imagine if Crook got done with Dre. Heck i think Neptunes could do alot for Crook
