I guess I'm different than most because I don't care about the production that much and I kind of feel like less is more when you have a great lyricist like Nas. Like the last shit he did with Kanye was overproduced and trash to me. I loved Lost Tapes 1 because the beats were very simplistic and it just felt like Nas was all in the studio alone off in a zone.
Take an artist like Ras Kass and he got panned for his beats on Soul On Ice but I actually loved him on those beats because you could really zero in on the lyrics and storytelling.
I'm hopeful though just because of the title. And Nas is one of those great artists like PAC who carries backlogs of unreleased gems that could fill full albums and I play in rotation for years and years. I got about 2-3 unreleased Nas albums of classic material, so he's gotta have some heat in the canon
Sccit:
nasir was far from trash ... and the beats on soul on ice was great
but yea, some artists can definitely make a good song on an average beat. they're few and far between tho.
