yeah.. I always said the only thing I regret about Ohtani is I would have loved to see him back before the NL had the DH.   Imagine the competitive advantage when your pitcher goes from a 9 hole hitter who is batter under .100 to being a .300 plus megapower hitter.

...I know HighEyeCue remembers those ol' school NL days when they used to have defensive specialists?  Like you would have a shortstop who was only hitting like sub .200 but played amazing shortstop.  The Braves used to have guys like that my favorite was Refeal Belliard.  So they would consistently win with having 2-3 spots in their lineups that were almost automatic outs.  The shortstop, the pitcher, and sometimes even a third position would be defensive guys.

That's why it's fascinating to me to think of a pitcher in the lineup in those days that it the best hitter in the league.  Anyway, props to Ohtani, Dodgers, Sccit, Dogg, LA.   I think my predictions have already came true about you all not needing to worry earlier in the season just cause you dropped a few games, but if you need more proof, you will surely get it when the Dodgers take the World Series.

The NL never had a DH slot until now.. they only adopted it in 2022

prior to that we used pinch hitters

yep...last time the Mets won in 1986 although I don't remember because i was too young iwe had Rafael Santana who was a good field/no hit SS. In fact if you look through most of the NL all the way through the early 90s the majority of SS were more defensive specialists than good hitters. So basically you had 2 automatic outs in the lineup the pitchers spot and SS. I do remember Beliard on those Brave teams, he was a perfect example

yeah, it's supposed to say "before the NL had a DH".  I edited it.
