COMPTON VS. MISSIONARY ... WHICH DO YOU PREFER?
astra4322:
Missionary slightly better but pretty equal albums too me.
The Predator:
Diary best song on Compton, Dre let the trumpet/sax boys jam it out on the end and kept it on.
''This is my passion, it's where my heart is
It gets the hardest when I think about the dearly departed
Like the nigga I started with
I know Eazy can see me now, looking down through the clouds
And regardless, I know my nigga still proud
It's been a while since we spoke but you still my folks
We used to sit back, laugh and joke
Now I remember when we used to do all-nighters
You in the booth and Cube in the corner writing
Where Ren at? Shout out to my nigga Yella''
Pressure - best production on Missionary.

I PERSONALLY THINK "COMPTON" IS A CLASSIC AND VERY UNDERAPPRECIATED .. DRE CAME WITH A FRESH SOUND THAT WAS TREMENDOUSLY PRODUCED AND LAYERED TO PERFECTION. ALL THE FEATURES DID THEIR THING AND THE ALBUM WAS BANGIN FRONT TO BACK. SONICALLY IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS TAILOR MADE TO BE PLAYED IN STADIUMS. THE GRIPE MOST PEOPLE HAD WAS THAT IT DIDNT HAVE THE TRADITIONAL DRE SOUND VOCALLY OR MUSICALLY.. BUT TO ME, IT HAD HINTS OF IT, JUST EVOLVED TO FIT THE MODERN TIMES.
ON THE FLIPSIDE, "MISSIONARY" SOUNDED FORCED AND INORGANIC TO ME. LIKE THERE WAS ZERO DIRECTION OR COHESION AND THE ALBUM JUST SOUNDS LIKE AN OVERALL MESS.. SONICALLY, IT SOUNDED THIN AND VERY WEAK COMPARED TO DRE'S PREVIOUS WORK, ALMOST LIKE HIS EAR WAS AFFECTED BY THE ANEURISM. SNOOP'S VOCALS, WHILE MORE ENERGETIC, SOUNDED COPY + PASTED AND OVERLY CONTRIVED. EASILY THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT FOR ME IN TERMS OF ANTICIPATED ALBUMS. I WOULDNT SAY ITS AN AWFUL ALBUM, BUT NOWHERE CLOSE TO WHERE IT SHOULD BE CONSIDERING ITS THE REUNION OF WHAT IS ARGUABLY THE GOAT RAPPER PRODUCER COMBO + A FOLLOW UP TO WHAT MANY CONSIDER THE GREATEST ALBUM IN RAP HISTORY..
ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, WHICH ALBUM DO YOU PREFER?

I prefer Missionary to Compton....I am still playing a couple of tracks from Missionary regularly in my playlist (Hard Knocks, Pressure, Fire, Gunz N Smoke, Sticcy Situation, Shangri-La).
I like one or two tracks from Compton but not a project I revisit at all.
Mat:
I Agree with Sccit Compton is miles above and better than Missionary some good tracks on it i do love the 2 beat switch up on Sticcy Situation

--- Quote from: Sccit on August 23, 2025, 10:59:34 PM ---i think people initially thought thank you was dope because we heard that "thangs just ain't the same for gangstas" throwback on drink champs, blended in wit the classic dre guitars
but when it actually came out, it was a letdown
vocals was loud in the mix.. low end wasn't on that dre standard .. guitars were drowned out by the siblance instead of hugging the vocals .... very disappointing, as that was the song i was looking forward to when i heard the snippet

I personally love 'Thank You'. I love Snoop's flow and cadence on it.
I still listen to Missionary seemi regularly to this day and rarely play Compton, as i have to be in a certain mood to want to listen to it.
Someone has just remastered/mixed it to adjust the vocals and some of the other sounds. I haven't listened to it yet through headphones, but hopefully they will do the same for a lot of the tracks on Missionary to add more weight and tone down the highs.
