dvd burning??? (need help)

i just bought a dvd burner n it came wit nero express software and sum other nero program that i can't think of at the moment.  but i can't burn dvd's i already own or any video files that i downloaded off the net.  can anybody help me out with sum names or links to some good software or programs for burning dvds.  also i've seen a number of different video formats like .avi, .mp3 and sum others, can someone tell me which formats are dvd burnable.
