one of the worst trades in Mets history was the Lenny Dykstra for Juan Samuel one in the middle of 1989...Samuel had been an all star with the Phillies but was having a down year and I guess the Mets brass was a little sick of fan favorite Lenny's attitude so they made that trade and Samuel who had played 2nd base his whole life was stuck in CF by the Mets...needles to say he didn't have a clue out there and they let him go after the season...Lenny went on to be an all-star with Philly and help them go to the World Series in 1993

Dykstra "nails" was one of those ol school characters in sports that doesn't quite exist anymore. And the Phillies had a lot of them. Dykstra was a character straight out of a movie like Charlie Sheen's Major League. All those guys on the Phillies could've been characters in a movie.
Terrible trade for the Mets. He would have fit in so well an been an urban legend for the Mets. I'm not an expert on Mets history but off the top of my head it seemed like they were really good in the 80's with phenom coke heads like Strawberry and Doc Gooden, and if they had Dykstra they could have added another crazy character, but the guy is a winner, and that would've made for a very entertaining clubhouse, they could've continued their winning through the first half of the 90's.

everything you said is true. definitely the worst Mets trade in my lifetime, the Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver ones were worse but both before I was born
Dykstra was in town last week to celebrate the 40th anniversary of that 1986 Championshio team, it was great to see 8)
