Tre Hale, who appears on Netflix crime show Nemesis, will portray infamous record executive Suge Knight in Snoop, Universal Pictures' biopic of entertainment mogul and rapper Snoop Dogg.

The feature has been on a casting tear as it heads toward a mid-September production start in and around Los Angeles.

Jonathan Daviss, one of the stars of Netflix series Outer Banks, is portraying Snoop Dogg, who emerged from Long Beach, Calif. in the 1990s to become one of the biggest names in rap.

Other actors on the call sheet playing personalities that influenced Snoop Dogg's life include Myles Bullock Be as Dr. Dre, Camron Jones as troubled rapper Tupac Shakur, Algee Smith as Warren G, and Lauren London as Snoop Dogg's mother.

Knight was the larger-than-life co-founder of Death Row Records, the notorious record label that helped bring rap and hip-hop into the mainstream with albums by Dr. Dre, Shakur, and of course, Snoop Dogg. The label went downhill due to several factors, among them the high-profile departures of Snoop Dogg and Dre in the late 1990s. (Knight was later sentenced to 28 years in prison for manslaughter after a fatal hit and run in 2015 near a promotional shoot for the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton.)

Craig Brewer is directing Snoop, which is being produced by Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer, the veteran producer behind the semi-autobiographical Eminem drama 8 Mile, and the company's Allan Mandelbaum. Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker are also producing.

Universal will release Snoop on Aug. 6, 2027.

Hale was a series regular on AppleTV+ series Platonic, playing  opposite Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne on the show. On the big screen, Hale will be seen in Empire City, an upcoming action thriller Empire City that also stars Gerard Butler and Hayley Atwell.

He is repped by Clear Talent Group, Crimson Media, The Initiative Group and Hansen Jacobson.

 Myles Bullock Be is ready for some peepin' and some creepin' as he has nabbed the role of Dr. Dre in Snoop, Universal Pictures' biopic of entertainment mogul and music icon Snoop Dogg.

Craig Brewer is directing the feature, which is being produced by Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer, the veteran producer behind the semi-autobiographical Eminem drama 8 Mile, and the company's Allan Mandelbaum. Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker are also producing.

Key to his success was his relationship with Dre, one of the members of influential gangsta rap group N.W.A. In the early 1990s, as Dre made his seminal solo album The Chronic, he was given a cassette of demo tracks featuring a young Snoop Dogg. He was impressed that he put Snoop Dogg on numerous tracks, including the mega-successful single "Nuthin' But a ‘G' Thang."

Dre became Snoop Dogg's mentor and produced the latter's debut album, Doggystyle, which is considered one of the key albums of the 1990s.

Brewer, who recently directed Song Sung Blue for Universal's specialty studio Focus Features, wrote the latest draft of the script, which was initially written by Joe Robert Cole. The feature will incorporate music from Snoop Dogg's vast catalog.

Universal, which previously made 2015's Oscar-nominated N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, will release Snoop on Aug. 6, 2027.

Senior vp production development Ryan Jones and director of development Tony Ducret are overseeing the project for the studio. Imagine's Jeb Brody is executive producing.

Snoop reunites Bullock Be with Brewer, who directed him in the 2024 Peacock miniseries Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, which had the actor part of an all-star cast that included Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson and Samuel L. Jackson.

The actor appeared in 20th Century's White Men Can't Jump and did a stint on Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's hit Starz series BMF, and earlier on starred in Marvel series Runaways.

Bullock Be, repped by Independent Artist Group and Liberman-Zerman Management, is currently shooting Hulu's Prison Break reboot Prison Break: Black Creek as a series lead.

Shakur was famously the troubled West Coast rapper who had success in the recording world as well as Hollywood, appearing in movies such as John Singleton's Poetic Justice and crime movie Gridlock'd, but who also served time in prison. He was ultimately killed in a drive-by in 1996.
 
Snoop Dogg and Shakur were both signed to Death Row Records and collaborated on hits such as "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted." The two had a major falling out when Shakur pressed Snoop Dogg to take sides in the West Coast-East Coast rivalry.

Algee Smith, best known for his work in the early seasons of Euphoria, is set to portray Warren G in Snoop, Universal Pictures' biopic of entertainment mogul and rapper Snoop Dogg.

A Grammy nominee, Warren G, whose real name is Warren Griffin III,  was a key member of the West Coast hip-hop scene with hits such as "Regulate" and "This D.J." The rapper was pivotal in Snoop Dogg's rise, forming a trio named the 213 in the early 1990s that also included Nate Dogg. Warren G ended up introducing Snoop Dogg to Dr. Dre, who then took the young rapper under his wing.

Smith played football star Chris McKay in HBO's Euphoria. He broke through with his performance portraying singer Ralph Tresvant in BET's highest-rated miniseries The New Edition Story and had roles in Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit and Shaka King's Judas and the Black Messiah. The latter two earned him NAACP Image Award nominations.
 
Smith will be a series regular in HBO's American Blue, starring opposite Milo Ventimiglia from showrunner Jeremy Carver and director David Ayer. He will also star alongside Jamie Foxx as boxing legend Pernell Whitaker in the upcoming Netflix drama Fight for 84.
