Warren G is an excellent rapper and a talented producer. I feel he didn't quite get the success he deserved and wasn't always given credit for everything he contributed to G-Funk.

He made great music, and I know he's still capable of putting out an excellent album. I actually wish he would get back to work and produce a new solo album.

As for his solo albums, I'd say my top picks for Warren G are:

- Regulate... G Funk Era
- Take a Look Over Your Shoulder
- The Return of the Regulator
- I Want It All

You're right, In The Mid-Night Hour & G Files are not remarkable albums at all. When they came out, I really struggled to listen to them.

no it doesnt mean being a producer. sometimes you just give the notes to an instrument player and let him play whats written on paper. it just makes you a musician on an album.

sometimes you let musicians to jam and improvise to the beat and if you like something you use it. that makes you musician and a writer/composer on an album.

if you compose melodies while jaming and improvising to the beat, and also you decide how track should proceed from start to end and you decide what kind of composition it needs with verses, chorus, bridges and whole structure. then it makes you a musician, writer/composer and a co producer on an album.

Thank you very much for all these details and explanations. It helps me better understand the role of a producer in general. I think quite a few people make the mistake of confusing a producer with a beatmaker, as i used to do, which explains, for instance, the unfounded criticism Dr. Dre faced at one point for supposedly doing nothing and relying on "ghost producers."

lets say 93-2004... return of the regulator is one of most underrated records of that post 2000 west coast hip hop.

Also 213 album was a classic although it didnt have warren g production instead of "groupie luv" remix on maxi single.

after 2004, his fall off began with such weak albums like midnight hour g funk files etc...

and you are right about warren had a good musician team. as you mentioned greg, ricky rouse, del atkins, aj luke, sean thomas were on "take a look over your shoulder" and andrew gouche, craig brockman, marion williams on "return of the regulator". musicians worked on "i want it all" album are missing and uncredited unfortunately.

21 Jumpstreet is one of the greatest beats of all time and whether produced by Daz Dillinger and/or Barney Rubble, Soopafly etc, beatmakers, producers whatever - whoever made that beat is a legend in my eyes and deserves an award for that track alone

Yes famous  producers like Dre, Quik are surrounded by  others producers,musicians but now if you listen to the new music , the bass and others instruments are played on a keyboard or a software . In a independant studio, you dont see many brass instruments lol

And about death row sounds , dont forget  one or the most important thing  : the musical equipment . Back in the days, musical gear was very expensive.
The labels get homogeneity of sound because of the equipment
