Makes for a fun story or internet headline, no fault of yours for falling for the clickbait: "He snitched on himself", but not accurate.
They finally found witnesses that were willing to testify, and certain people willing to dig into this and really pursue it that ultimately got the job done.
If what you said is correct, and all it took was him talking about it on a podcast or a book, he would have been convicted years ago and there would have been no need for the prosecution to call as many witnesses and expert testimony as they did in this case.

him speaking on the podcasts and admitting guilt in a book is what revived the investigation and made them seek witnesses etc.

You can go with that if you'd like. I can tell you the case never died; it was a matter of finding credible witnesses willing to testify. As the witnesses got older and more time passed, some were willing to open up more and they were able to build a case. Again, if you were in the know, everyone knew Keefe was behind it, way before he even started hitting the podcast circuit. Him talking about it was really irrelevant to the case. Certainly did him no favors, but what he said in his podcast or in his book wasn't the crux of the case.

not sure how familiar u are with the case, but he was granted impunity in another case if he admitted killing pac, which he did....
that impunity didn't extend past that case, so the prosecution built the case around his admission to guilt outside of the deal
