Confusion about World Cup....
« on: June 10, 2002, 04:59:09 PM »
i was reading an article that said if Mexico loses to Italy, they're out of the world cup... they  need to either tie or beat italy... however this seems dumb to me... i guess i dont understand it...

lets say mexico loses...  the records will be

Mexico 2-1
Italy 2-1
Croatia 2-1 (if they beat ecuador)
Ecudaor 0-3

now to my knowlede with sports... Mexico and Croatia should be the ones to advance since Mexico beat Croatia and Croatia beat Italy.... and have the tie-breaker over them... but then i see that the world cup is run off by a point system... can someone explain that to me, cause i dont understand..... and i really dont understand how if mexico loses they are out of the world cup...

Mexico 6 Points- 3:1 , +2
Italy 3 Points- 3:2, +1
Croatia 3 Points- 2:2 +0
Ecuador 0 Points- 1:4, -3

Possible results.....

Italy has to go for the win against Mexico, so they can add up 6 points.

If italy ties with Mexico and Croatia beats Ecuador, Italy is out and Mexico gets first in the group.

If Italy beats Mexico 1-0, and Croatia beats Ecuador 1-0, Mexico and Italy go in with Italy as the leader.

Man this is too crazy. The first time Mexico gets back to back wins in the World Cup and they might not even qualifiy.

hopefully this will clear things up

3 Points for a Win

1 Point for a draw

0 Points for a loss

Mexico - 6 Points
Croatia - 3 Points
Italy - 3 Points
Ecuador 0 Points

If Croatia beat Ecuador and ITaly beat Mexico, Mexico, Italy and Croatia will all be on 6 points.

To see who ges through, it will come down to who has the best goal difference

Mexico have scored 3 Goals and conceded 1 - this means their current goal difference is +2

Croatia have scored 2 and conceded 2 - their current goal diff is 0

Italy have scored 3 and conceded 2 - their goal diff is +1

Whoever has the best goal difference goes through

Understand now?

That   goal     differential  shit  is     GIZZAY !!!

A  win  is a  win.         Mexico  already beat  Croatia  ,    but apparently that doesnt  really count for much   since  Croatia can still    make the  round of 16  over them.       STUPID !!!    >:(

Yea, that goal difference thing is Gizzay... I mean, if they all end up with a 2-1-0 record... you would think Mexico would have an advantage over Croatia just because they beat them and not because Croatia scored this many goals... Errr

yea thats gizzay because then the better team  might not always advance... I mean NBA basketball goes by a point system too, but it different terms... and the best teams always get favored

The best teams are usually the ones that score the most and concede the least

usually... if you look at american football ... the baltimore ravens won the superbowl because of a great defense... their offense sucked, but their defense  was sooooo dope... no one could score on them... now mexico may not be a scoring machine, but they know how to defend... at least by the looks of it..... defense wins championship....

Attacking football is far more exciting, so this rule encourages it

Well it's not as bad as the English Divisions 1,2, and 3 used to be until a few years ago. They used to just go by goals scored and not goal difference to decide places. So a team could be great defensively and say have scored 40 goals and let in 10 goals. They would be beaten by a team who had scored say 60 goals and let it 54 goals and shit like that.

Good job they changed that really.
