I don't think it's compulsory. However, I think many Sikh's honor the 5 thing, whatever it's called... they have a turban, uncut hair and beard, a small knife/sword they carry with them, and there's 2 other things I can't remember. I'm sure lots of it is cultural, and Sikhs not living in a traditionally Sikh country probably wouldn't deem it as important. Blade could tell us more.

It's more a symbol of their faith than an actual weapon, so they might be able to do it, I dunno.

A person cannot be a Khalsa, a true Sikh,[kinda like a baptized christian or whtever] without the 5 K's. Guru Nanak said a Muslim does not need to necessarily pray 5 times a day toward Mecca in order to attain God (something exterior)), and that a Hindu does not necessarily need to wear the sacred thread to attain God (something exterior), why would this not also apply to the 5 K's (something exterior)? Its the same thing.. The Gurus' whole viewpoint seems to be that these exterior things BY ITSELF have no spiritual signifigance that automatically bring a person closer to God. The Gurus were not against praying in the direction of Mecca or wearing of the sacred thread as much as they were against the notion that by simply doing those rituals it made a person closer to God (something that was inherant in doing both of those rituals).
Guru Gobind Singh has said,
"Whosoever assumes a religious garb pleases not God even a bit. O ye men, understand this clearly in your minds, that God is attained not through showmanship. They who practice deceit, attain not Deliverance in the Hereafter. They do so only to accomplish the affairs of the world and even the kings worship them for their appearance! But through showmanship, God is attained not, howsoever one searches. He who subdues his mind alone recognizes the Transcendent God."
-Guru Gobind Singh
Guru Ji says clearly that God cannot be attained through showmanship or exterior displays of any kind. It is completely internal devotion that determines this.
So no its not really compulsary unless your a true sikh 'baptized' in the sikh way.
@Doggy...
Yeah the small dagger is one of the 5 K's a Khalsa sikh has to carry.
It is called a KIRPAN. It is a Ceremonial Sword. A symbol of dignity and the Sikh struggle against injustice. It is worn purely as a religious symbol and not as a weapon.
And I dont know if they allow it in airports and stuff...
Anyway I hope that answers your questions, peace
