READY FOR DEATH One of the most anticipated albums this year on my list is Royce 5'9's Death Is Certain, due out late Feb/early March on Koch. As I said in this column before, the stuff I have heard from the album is incredible - the production is raw and the lyrics are brutally honest ("My wife don't like my album / its way too dark for women / she say it sound like I hold grudges / she'd rather listen to Joe Budden's"). This album could possibly make Royce the best lyricist currently not holding a major label recording contract. The lead single and video is "Hip-Hop", produced by DJ Premier, with the b-side being "Throwback". The album will be produced by Carlos Broady, Ty Fyffe, Asar, and DJ Premier. In other news, there is an incredible freestyle of Royce rhyming on the "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" instrumental floating around out there, as well as another track that may not make the album, "Today", where Royce actually apologizes to the streets and the backpackers for trying to go commercial... Since when do rappers accept responsibility for their mistakes? Brutally honest and incredibly dope, Royce is the artist to watch for 2004.
"Today", where Royce actually apologizes to the streets and the backpackers for trying to go commercial.
wow...i'd really like to hear the single & that "Today" song
It's at least equal or maybe even better than "Boom", imo.. I think I might like this better than Boom after a few listens..Got that vintage good old hiphop feel to it.. I'll have to write up the lyrics, but there's a lot of sick metaphors/lines in there, so I probably won't get them all..
