i think its because a lot of movies and stuff show like 10 gang members sitting on a porch drinking a 40 lol...even in friday cube & chris tucker sat on the porch 90% of the movie.

It's because back in the days, in the South, the blacks had no way of keeping cool during the hot summers, so they would just be out on the porch all day.
