What an artist/label site should have?
« on: January 12, 2004, 02:11:26 AM »
ok.. this ones a bit different.. record labels/artists etc make sites for us with what they think we want... but what do we really want?

I feel that the content should be the driving factor behind a site, not just a pretty bunch of pictures + a stream to their current single. (function before form..)

so what fan or label sites have impressed and why, what features are unique to some fan sites? and which ones are pitiful?

its not gonna happen.. but imagine we're making a "what fansite?" list of features to compare sites...

i'll list a few real obvious things

- News
- Profile
- Biography
- Discography
- Audio
- Video
- Gallery
- Forum

I think in terms of a forum, having the artist in question post personally is a big plus... provided they can type a little better than Daz of course ;)

It just makes the experience a lot more personal, and being that the Internet is one of the few ways an artist can reach out to the fans on that kind of level, it makes sense to take advantage of it.

A well workin communiity is another important point imo. Artists can stay in contact with their fans without being too close, feel me? On this way there will be way more news for us and we the artist/label stays in everybodys mind. News is the main point. Just take a look at DPg recordz. U can hate on Daz, but he keeps himself in the news and this makes him selling even more. The Death Row community Inc. their fansites kept Death Row alife when there we're no news when Suge was in jail...

Some sort of exclusivity...like what Warren G proposed, things only website members can get their hands on would make things a lot better. Maybe an artist diary?

Yeah, that really pisses me off. Most of the time fansites can come up with news (whether its fake or not), yet official sites hardly ever seem to get updated.
