One Of the most interesting things you'll ever read:Manson's Defense Speech
white Boy:

--- Quote ---But I'm only what lives inside of you, each and every one of you. These children, they take a lot of narcotics because you tell them not to. Any child you put in a room and you tell them, "Don't go through that door," he never thought of going through that door until you told him to go through the door. You go to the high schools and you show them pills and you show them what not to take, how else would they know what it was unless you tell them?
--- End quote ---
thats true as fuck

Trauma-san:
^ In a nutshell, it's like this:
Manson was in Juvi all his life until he was an adult, and then was locked back up a couple more times for petty stuff. He's probably pure evil, as far as I can tell... but evil isn't necessarily what people think it is. He doesn't go around killing people, etc.... basically what happened was, he was released from prison at about 30 or 32 or so, and he didn't have anywhere to go. He ran into some people, and kind of wanted to be a musician. He loved the beatles. "Magical Mystery Tour" is a beatles song, "Helter Skelter" is a beatles song, etc. he kind of incorporated what he thought the music was telling him, into his own music and his own philosophy.
His philosophy is kind of sound; you can't really argue against it, but it's the way it manifests itself in people that causes problems. He was a struggling musican, basically a hippy with nowhere to go, living by eating out of trash cans, etc. and kind of got known around california.
ONE of the people who "knew" him was Denny Wilson, the drummer for the Beach Boys, and Brian's brother. Denny & Charlie hung out together, Charlie moved into Denny's house, and the Beach Boys even ended up recording one of Charles Manson's songs! He wrote a song on one of their albums, it's not half bad.
Anyways, eventually Charles kind of took over Denny's life, he wouldn't leave his house, he had dozens of people staying there with him, etc. till eventually he got kicked out, or the police made him leave, or something.
Eventually, Charles & his 'family' found their way to an old man's ranch out in the middle of the desert. He let them stay there... Manson was kind of a cult leader, the kids staying with him would all have sex with each other and would rob and steal to kind of support each other. Nothing major though.
Manson was turned down by a famous record executive, whom Charlie wanted to help him record a demo album. (he already had several songs recorded, but wanted to make a new demo to shop around seeing as his other two had been turned down). The Exec thought he sounded too derivitive of the Beatles, and kind of gave Charlie the run around. This exec was introduced to Charlie by Denny Wilson.
Anyways, Charlie expressed to his family what had happened. So they knew about that mess. He also had been telling them that eventually the civil rights movement was going to get bloody, and that black people would fight all the white people.
Here's where it gets tricky. MANSON claims, that he was nobody, and that all his life he just pretended and played games with people, a 'magical mystery tour' where you just imagine yourself in a better place, or whatever. Thats' how he got through prison. He claims in the testimony one guy in the family thought he was an actor, but had never made a movie, he just pretended for days at a time. So, Manson claims that he joked around that since they were out in the desert, maybe all the white and black people would kill each other, and then they could come out of the desert and rule the world.
When no riot happened, Manson 'joked' that the black people wouldn't know how to kill the white people unless somebody showed them how to do it.
...........
So, it comes down to what do you believe. Manson claims he was just pretending, playing games.
The court believes that Manson told his family to go kill the record executive, and sent them to his house. He told them that this would spark a race riot, and to write racial slurs and 'fuck you pigs' and shit like that on the walls, and "HELTER SKELTER" in their blood, and that it would start the race riot.
What DID happen, was females in his family went to the record exec's house, but Charlie didn't realize that the exec didn't live there. Dennis Wilson just visited him there, the house was sold after that to Sharon Tate, a famous hollywood actress, the equivalent of Charlize Theron or Sandra Bullock today. The girls entered the house, killed Sharon Tate (who was pregnant)... cut the baby out of her womb, killed her husband, and several other people who were at the house that night, and spread blood all over the walls. They killed 2 more people the next night, and eventually even killed one of the Family's own defense lawyers in the middle of the trial!
Charlie claims he never told anybody to do anything, he was just suggesting that maybe it would happen, and that he didn't tell them to kill anybody, they just did it on their own. He claims he knew about it afterwards, but couldn't snitch on anybody. When he was in court, he was pretty angry and acted up a lot, which probably helped convince the Jury he was guilty. Most people think he has a hypnotic or suggestive personality... anyway you look at it, he had a couple dozen people living in the desert with him thinking he was Jesus Christ.
