Suga Free – Street Gospel
1. Intro
2. Why U bullshittin’?…Great beat by Quik with a strange touch of “Egyptian” sounding instruments. It sounds great though. Suga Free puts down a tight flow. 4/5
3. I’d rather give you my bitch…The beat is tight and Suga Free changes his flow up a lot. He uses his traditional “slow then speed up” style, but then he sings certain parts. 4/5
4. Doe doe and a skunk…Production sounds like an old school R&B track. A different kind of weed song. 3.5/5
5. Don’t no suckaz live here…Tight mix of 70’s funk in the production. Playa Hamm lays down some tight lines on the second verse. Chorus is hella tight. 4/5
6. Tip toe…Tight, laidback gangsta beat. DJ Quik blesses the mic along with Suga Free and Hi-C. All three rip up the track. Nice hook. 4/5
7. I wanna go home (The county jail song)…A unique track. The beat is nothing more than someone constructing a beat on a tabletop. His lines sound like a freestyle, but it’s a tight ass flow. 3.5/5
8. If U stay ready…Classic Quik production. Suga Free flows well to it. Playa Hamm appears for a couple decent verses. The last verse is the best when they trade lines back and forth. 3.5/5
9. Fly fo life…The beat is decent, but Suga Free’s lyrics are off the hook, especially when he flows a whole verse without a break or pause. I could do without the saxophone in the loop though. 4/5
10. On my way…Very soft track. The instrumental sounds like it could be a “Quik’s Groove”. Suga Free’s slow and fast style is a nice match to the production. A+ chorus. 4.5/5
11. Secrets…The production gets your attention right away. It sounds like a Big Hutch beat. Suga Free uses another mix of rapping and singing. Dope hook. 4.5/5
12. Table interlude…insert
13. Dip da…Very smooth production. A nice track which praises his mother and putting down his father. Suga Free spits some heartfelt lyrics here. He does the hook perfectly. 5/5
14. Tip toe (reprise)…instrumental
OVERALL…4.25/5
Suga Free has a very unique rapping style. He hardly ever carries the same tempo throughout a track, rather he raps slower at the beginning and then speeds up the latter part of the line. He also uses a mix of singing on some select tracks. This album was entirely produced by DJ Quik so the production is top-notch. The lyrical content is heavy on pimpin’ and women, but he puts a very different twist on it.
