Pentium 4 or the new AMD ATHLON 64
« on: June 08, 2004, 10:21:40 AM »
im getting a processor soon, and i got a bit confused, im getting the P-4 2.6 Ghz for the same price as an AMD ATHLON 64 2.0Ghz which has a 1600Mhz system bus, and a 1MB cache memory, whereas the P4 has 800 Mhz system bus and only 512K cache...people told me tht its cause P4 is more reliable....but which 1 shud i get ?

it also depends on what kind of computer you're getting... an athlon works better on a lap top because pentiums tend to drain the power a little bit faster...but pentiums are more reliable

Pentium M are the best for laptops. Pentium 4 are horrible on laptops. anyway.

Pentium 4 is a better chip than AMD. There built better and more reliable. I think they have  little bit of better performance, but not that much for an equivalent clock speed.

Athlons are good if your strapped on cash, or if you prefer amd.

honestly....it doesnt really matter what chip you get. might as well just get a amd chip and spend the extra 100$$ on a different part in your computer (get a better version of a video card maybe)

Get the Athlon 64...the brand new AMD 64 FX-53 at 2.4ghz outperformed the Pentium 4 at 3ghz.  If you plan on using this computer for gaming, get the AMD...by far.

athlon 64 are pointless to buy right now. There overpriced, and nothing is optimized for them yet. so why waste the money?

My buddy and I run a Custom Systems center. We have built an order book of over 5,600 completed and sold systems. Except for the Pentium 4 HT Extreme, AMD smokes them all. Forget all that reliability crap also. Every benchmark we have ever run on EVERY overclocked AMD system we have ever built outperforms the P4. And The AMD Athlon64 FX-53 is by far the finet chip we have ever seen. We cannot wait until Microsoft and some of the other software developers step up to the plate with some quality 64bit apps. If you stack up the Pentium 4 HT Extreme Edition against an Athlon 3200+, yes, you wil see a SLIGHT advantage over the AMD, but that is comparing Ferrari to Acura.
May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't.

So...compare the P4 HT Extreme to the 64 FX-53...not the 64 3200+.

A64 is a dope choice for the future.
More and more main boards support them, and when Win XP 64 drops, it's over!
According to reports, Microsoft are delaying Win 64 on purpose, to wait until Intel drops their 64 bit cpus.
