Scott Storch's knack for laying down dazzling keyboard lines led to a burgeoning career as a musically blessed producer by the early 2000s after aligning himself with production duties for high-profile rappers such as Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes. Long before Storch was crafting entire tracks for superstar rappers, he was a humble keyboardist.

We talk to him exclusively to get the lowdown on the hottest producer in the game right now.

hiphopmusic: So tell us how you got started out in the game?

scott storch: Well to cut a long story short i was just a keyboardist laying tracks for a few artists in philly. then i was working on the Organix album for the roots and that blew up. well when i say blew up it gave us (the roots) an album deal. and i remember that being the best time of my life.

Hiphopmusic: How did the whole situation with Dr. Dre arise?

Scott Storch:As the years passed and my reputation grew as the talented keyboardist in America's premier live hip-hop "band," (Roots) I began extending my reach, taking on production opportunities. Then my big break came when my keyboard riff laced the mammoth lead single to Dr. Dre's comeback album, "Still D.R.E." Working alongside Dre obviously had its pluses, and soon i found myself co-producing the lead single to Xzibit's Restless album, "X," and getting the opportunity to produce three tracks for Snoop Dogg's Tha Last Meal.


Hiphopmusic: Some of your best-known productions include Terror Squad's "Lean Back," Mario's "Let Me Love You," 50 Cent's "Candy Shop," and Beyoncé's "Naughty Girl will there come a time when you want to quit while your ahead.

SS: NEVER ! i love what i'm doing, the people that i'm working with. i do admit there were times when i thought to myself 'hey i've made enough money out of this to retire' but i can't see myself doing anything else right now.

hiphopmusic: Who do you have respect for in the industry, who is your favourite producer right now.

SS: well obviously i have to say the Dr. he's shown me a lot of things that will help me go a long way and hopefully one day i'll reach his status. apart from that i like kanye, neptunes, cool & Dre, my man timbo, Just Blaze, HI-TEK but one producer i really like is salaam remi nas's producer. he's one of those unsung hero's and some of the stuff he comes up with i wish i produced sometimes.

hiphopmusic: We know you have a great relationship with fat joe and also 50 what is your take on thier whole beef right now?

SS: man uh, to be honest with you man thats their problem i like to stay out of it i just stick to what i know and thats making hits. 50 is my man and Joe is also a friend of mine and hopefully they'll resolve their issues and also with jada who i also have a good relationship with.

hiphopmusic: In a recent interview Ja rule claimed that your 'not all that' due to your affiliation with aftermath and your reluctance to work with him anymore what do you have to say on that?

SS: I don't need Ja Rule, he needed me. when i did clap back he was in a state of depression and he said to me 'i need your hottest track to bring me back into the streets' cos his street cred was quickly fading away as we all know and nobody at Murder INC could find that right track to help him catapult back. so when clap back hit the streets it kinda Helped him out a little bit but not a lot cos in my opinion he could not pull it off we did the best we could, that track was best suited to say nas or ludacris or nelly you know what i'm sayin but good luck to him keep making your money.

hiphopmusic: How do you feel Eminem has Grown as a Producer?

SS: Em is a very talented individual the way he does things in the studio and how quickly he learns is amazing. people say that his music sounds the same or whatever but anybody can make a beat, the thing they need to realise is you need to create a signature beat so that everytime you hear a beat you automatically think 'yeah lil jon or dr dre or just blaze' thats why i feel that some producers need to start creating a signature beat rather telling the artist to say thier name. yes the artists i work with say my name on their tracks but thats their choice it's thier way of appreciating my work.


hiphopmusic: Now we need to know, What is the situation with detox and are you contributing anything to it?

SS: The good news is that Detox is in production right now and dre is going through the beats submitted by many many producers from just blaze, cool & Dre, Kanye, Jeff Bhasker, Focus, Em, Havoc, Neptunes, Hi-tek and also myself. The bad news is nobody has any idea when detox will see the light of day people say summer 2006 but dre wants this to surpass chronic and for him to do that it might just take that much longer because he needs to dedicate all his energy on that but right now he's busy with busta and Eve and Game's next record so he's trying to do all those things but who knows. believe me nobody wants to see detox more than me but we'll just have to wait.

hiphopmusic: damn, i was really hoping Detox to be released next summer.

SS: look, it might happen but all i'm saying is that he's got a lot going on for him to focus on one project. but i gotta tell you man the stuff i'm hearing right now 'OH MY GOD' the game will not be the same EVER. he did 1 beat that he said he wanted Jay Z to jump on and if that happens they can both retire for good. and not just dre other producers are bringing their best work to the table so my work is cut out. the best i've heard, and i'm being very humble now, is from hi-tek this guy made dr dre shocked by what he was coming up with.

Hiphopmusic: Can you clarify the whole Stiuation with Justin Timberlake and 'cry me a river' is there friction between you two?

SS: Hell yeah there is. he aint getting another storch track even if he paid me $10mil (well maybe) but the point is i felt so disrespected when he went to recieve his award for that song and only acknowledged timbo. i don't know why he did it we worked hard to make that track work. i don't blame tim for not acknowledging me, justin was the artist he should have said something but i don't really care anymore that's in the past things are looking good for me right now.

Hiphopmusic: Do you feel as though you need to chill for a minute and take a step back becuase everywhere you look we got scott storch producing a track. now some people maybe put off by that and too much off something could be detremental for you, what do you think to that?

SS: erm, i hear what your saying Dr.Dre gave me the same talk not long ago and my take on that is it all depends on
the quality of music your putting out and how involved in a track you are. for example you get producers in so many videos that you damn near see them everywhere and that to me is what puts people off not that i have anything against that but you won't see me in every video on BET. to answer your question i might cool it for a while but i don't know when that time will come. i'm having so much fun right now.

hiphopmusic: We need to ask you for those future producers out there. What equipment or gear do you use?

SS: It depends on what I'm doing really. I do most main sequencing and sampling on an MPC 4000. In my main MIDI room I also have a MPC 4000, XV-5080, 2080, 3080, I love Roland, anything Roland I love. I have the whole 1080 through 5080 series. I have a Korg Ms2000. I have an SE 1x, studio electronics 1x, and the analog box. I got pro tools with every plug in. I've got logic, but I haven't really gotten that into Logic, I got Logic with pretty much every VST ever made but I haven't gotten too heavily into that yet.

Hiphopmusic: Is there someone that you haven't worked with that you'd like to work with someday?

SS: Micheal Jackson most definately. i know he's having problems at the moment but i wish him all the best and if i ever did 1 track with him i will be tha happyest guy in the world.

hiphopmusic: Well you know that right now people want to hear everything with your name attached to it. You can't sneak in a song here and there anymore.

SS: I love what I do, I love my job. There's no better feeling than just going in and just working with someone and what comes out is something that the world knows about. I can't believe it, still to this day. You never get used to that. You get used to it when you feel like you're an artist. I don't know, the artist thing is not me. I love making music, though. I love playing. The keyboard is my journal.

hiphopmusic: Who would you say has impressed you this year. what album did you enjoy from this year or what album are you looking forward to?

SS: The game's album by far is good enough to be a classic, also fat joe's album is looking good man, cool & dre came good on that record. But i'm really looking forward to Kanye west late registration.

hiphopmusic: And finally who are you working with right now and what can we expect from you in the next six months?

SS: I'm working with Lloyd Banks, Eve, Busta, Mary J, Obie trice, ludacris, Ja Rule HA HA, P. Diddy, Styles P, Olivia, nelly, LL cool J, Freeway gonna be very busy for the rest of 2006.
