Tyson camp blames injury

source bbc sport

Mike Tyson's manager, Shelley Finkel, claims his fighter suffered a serious knee injury in his loss to England's Danny Williams in Louisville.
Finkel said an MRI scan showed that Tyson had torn a ligament in his left knee in the opening round.

"That's why he couldn't throw the right hand the rest of the fight," Finkel said, adding that Tyson could not walk after the fight.

"I was screaming at him to throw it, but he couldn't."

Tyson dominated the first round, rocking Williams with shots to the head, before apparently motioning towards his knee and grimacing.

Williams then gained control and, in the fourth round, knocked Tyson out with a series of punches that left the former world champion sprawled on the canvas.

"In retrospect I wish he had said something and said he couldn't continue," Finkel said.

After the fight, Tyson's trainer, Freddie Roach, credited Williams with fighting a good fight, but said Tyson was hampered by the injury.

"It's kind of hard to pivot and throw some shots without your left knee," Roach said. "But Danny Williams surprised a lot of us."

this is just showing the win is tainted...

"Tyson dominated the first round, rocking Williams with shots to the head, before apparently motioning towards his knee and grimacing. "

When you get older, its harder to stay in shape and recover from injuries so he probably did suffer an injury. I think this comeback fight shows that his career is coming to an end. He had a great run though.

Anyway i've seen probably the most exciting matches (i mean live on TV) of my life fought by Tyson, so somehow this is sad. His career is over. :'(

Tyson second best ever?  That's a joke.  All the boy was known for was his KO punch.  If you could sustain a beating for a few rounds then it's all over for him.  The boy is good but he could have been a lot better if he worked on his stamina.  As it stands, he's lucky to be named even amongst the top 5.

He was the youngest world champion. That's gotta amount to some greatness.

Mike Tyson Undergo's Knee Surgery, Williams
Reported By: Boxing Insider - 08.02.2004 04:24 PM

TYSON TO UNDERGO SURGERY TODAY TO REPAIR TORN KNEE CARTILAGE

PHOENIX, AZ (August 2, 2004) – MIKE TYSON will undergo arthroscopic surgery today to repair the complex lateral meniscus tear he suffered in the first round of his fight against Danny Williams last Friday night in Louisville, KY.

Dr. Richard Emerson, Team Physician Emeritus for the Phoenix Suns, who diagnosed Tyson’s injury over the weekend after evaluating the MRI and examining the knee, will perform the surgery in Phoenix.

“Under normal circumstances the pain and locking that occurs with this injury would make it impossible for the athlete to continue and he would have to be taken out of the game or the boxing match on a stretcher or with assistance,” said Dr. Emerson. “I’m shocked that Mike was able to box for three more rounds after the injury occurred and that he was able to walk away from the ring.”

“It explains a lot,” said Shelly Finkel, Tyson’s adviser. “Once he lost the ability to pivot, turn, or move laterally, much less put pressure on his left leg, he lost the ability to throw anymore meaningful right hands which had been so effective up to the point of the injury.”
