The significance of beating france is they were our closest neighbour and we had been enemies for a long time its only in the last 100 years or so we have supposively been friends. our biggest mistake was giving them back their caribean islands after innihilated them in the 7 year war as this was a huge source of income for them and enabled them to rebuild their forces after we bankrupted them. fortunatly for us we had the dutch system of the government being able to borrow money by selling government debt (still used today) which let us finance war while the french governement resorted to begging and stealing but still couldn't afford it. later on it was their steam ships which made us build hms warrior the ultimate ship of its time. basically france has always been jelous of us.
You know the first cold war was between russia and briton and it was over who could map afganistan the fastest as the those who had the knowledge of the terrain would innevitably be the victor.
One of the huge benefits for us controling india is we used indians to fight our wars, british indian troops in india out numbered british troops 3 to 1 and they could be mobilised to the far east and africa where it would takes us much longer to send troops from briton which was another key element to holding our empire together.

We even gracefully gave up the majority of our empire after ww2 while other thaught to keep/enlarge theirs.
What truely sets our empire above everyone elses is the industrialisation we baught to the world and the promotion of trade.
This is all off the top of my head please feel free to add i may come up with some more. Also list other countries and your reasons why you think they are great and we can discuss which is the greatest

yeah later on it may have happened anyways.. but under better circumstances..
funny now how the US and UK are still tight, whereas even the US now see's the french for the bitches they are

it wouldn't of happenned if we did what we later did in australia and had local representation which is what we had refused the american settlers thus starting the revolution.
