It's a pseudo-political album, and as such, i'm not buying it or downloading it.  I don't really like music that offends half the audience.

ÛÛÛÛ  A Green Day masterpiece? Shut up, Nimrod, it's true.               ÛÛÛÛ
 ÛÛÛÛ                                                                     ÛÛÛÛ
 ÛÛÛÛ  By Lorraine Ali                                                    ÛÛÛÛ
 ÛÛÛÛ                                                                     ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  NewsweekSept. 20 issue - It's not easy growing older when          ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  immaturity is your shtik. Green Day were MTV's class clowns for    ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  much of the '90s. They played a kind of ding-dong-ditch—demanding  ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  your attention by annoying the hell out of you. They replaced      ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  punk's hard-core social rebellion with soft-core potty humor,      ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  making "Dookie," "Nimrod" and other CDs classics among             ÛÛÛÛ
 ÛÛÛÛ  Slurpee-chugging chuckleheads.                                     ÛÛÛÛ
 ÛÛÛÛ                                                                     ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  Green Day's members are all older than 30 now. If the title of     ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  their first studio album in almost four years, "American Idiot,"   ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  suggests yet another adolescent spit-wad, don't be fooled. This    ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  is one of the best rock albums and the biggest surprise of the     ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  year—a punk-rock opera and one of the only mainstream offerings    ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  to really address the emotional, moral and political confusion of  ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  our times. The 19 tracks, two of which are more than nine minutes  ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  long, tell of a suburban kid's stumbling toward adulthood and      ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  contending with war, "one nation controlled by the media," his     ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  divorced parents, the neighborhood drug dealer and even the local  ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  7-Eleven. As a singer, Billie Joe Armstrong is no D'Angelo, but    ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  he can nail frustration, numbness and innocence, as well as the    ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  loss of it. On the title track, he paints the picture of a         ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  disillusioned kid: "Maybe I am the faggot, America/I'm not part    ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  of a redneck agenda." By the album's close, that kid has turned    ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  into a self-centered, middle-aged loser: "I got a kid in New York  ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  and a kid in the Bay/I haven't drank or smoked nothin' in over 22  ÛÛÛÛ
 ÛÛÛÛ  days."                                                             ÛÛÛÛ
 ÛÛÛÛ                                                                     ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  Musically, the band finally ventures beyond the safety of          ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  three-chord jingles and tries out some sophisticated               ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  arrangements, swinging from Cheap Trick-style pop to haunting      ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  acoustic moments. The very un-Green Day trimmings—bells, hand      ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  claps, tambourines and harmonious backing vocals—add even more     ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  depth. But the big news is that Green Day now know when to pull    ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  back and let the most understated moments seep in. They have       ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  dropped their protective shield of wacky irony, so that even the   ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  straight-ahead punk seems like fresh territory. A lot can go       ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  wrong when you stop pretending you don't care. Growing up is the   ÛÛÛÛ
ÛÛÛÛ  most daring move this band's ever made.                            ÛÛÛÛ
