Dr Dre's cancelled "Aftermath" album + other Death Row stuff
« on: October 07, 2004, 02:56:47 AM »
I'm talking about all these songs that the ex-Death Row guys keep on talking about, like the original version of Got My Mind Made Up and Dre's 2nd Death Row album. Who owns the masters of these tracks, and why the hell doesn't he release them? You know if Suge had them he'd release them by now because he seems to have put out all the crap Snoop and Pac made while there. I've heard that a couple of people connected with Death Row visit this forum sometimes, so what's the deal with all these hidden tracks? Will they ever see the light of day?

Sorry if this is the 100th thread made on this subject or whatever, but I've been listening to some old Death Row so I got curious.

not sure who owns them... but Suge can't release any Dre stuff without authoriation. Dre won a court case over this a few years ago when they tried selling individual Dre (and other Row) tracks via this online system that would let you build custom CD's.

the outcome is that "dre's original artistic vision" should be protected.. i.e. if he made it for his album, it shouldnt appear on anything else.

will they see light of day.. not likely.. unless they already have like original dre/snoop version of zoom (is that what you mean got my mind made up?).

I meant the version Daz and Kurupt were talking about in the XXL special on AeoM, with Lady of Rage and Inspectah Deck instead of Pac. But thanks for the info, sad to see that Suge and Dre's beef would deny the fans of some good music.

well some of dre's "chronic ii" aka "papa's got a brand new funk" or whatever ended up being on  murder was the case ( natural born killaz).. and all eyez on me (cali love (rumours of an OG version with a cube verse) / can't c me (originally a dre solo)) ...  the policy over there was, and still is that they always put the best shit thats there on the current project the company is focused on... pragmatic right?.. tracks are rarely finished and mixed down until right before they're done.. shits never finished until they mix the album down.. so there may well be lots of incomplete beats. verses and concepts that were left off for various reasons. its rare for complete songs to be left around.  see how the row had to do a lot of remixing for the DPG 2002 project.

i think dre was upset because he wanted his best shit for his own projects. another track that was rumoured to be for dre's project was "keep their heads ringin" (friday soundtrack) and another called "ghetto tango" which ended up being "been there, done that"..

can you imagine a dre album from that era with tracks like  cali love, natural born killers, can 't c me and keep their heads ringin.. ?  that'd be the shit!

:o Somebody needs to raid his studio.

So Death Row was pretty unorganised with their stuff?  :-\ Sounds about right from what I've heard of Suge's business ethic. Ah well.

well the thing is... for some periods at the row dre was under house arrest and at another stage he was in a halfway house for 5 months... so a lot of the work was done in dre's home studio.. so it never saw "the vaults".. stuff done at the row studios appears to always be kept under lock and key.  (i heard they tell the engineers to do that recently)

I could have sworn cant c me was originally for daz n kurupt and for dogg food. But was taken off coz it was decided there would be no dre production on it.

I meant the version Daz and Kurupt were talking about in the XXL special on AeoM, with Lady of Rage and Inspectah Deck instead of Pac. But thanks for the info, sad to see that Suge and Dre's beef would deny the fans of some good music.

hey homie you read that part wrong in XXL, Daz and Kurupt were hating on Dr. Dre.  Daz said that once 2Pac starting working on the album he was doing an interview and he was hyping "got my mind made up" song saying that it was produced by Dre because Dre told him he did that beat.  According to Daz, he told 2Pac that he produced "got my mind made up" ahhhhhh fuck typin this shit, just read the text a little more carefully.  From XXL:

"Got My Mind Made Up"
Featuring Daz Dillinger, Inspectah Deck, Kurupt, Method Man and Redman
Produced by Daz Dillinger

Daz Dillinger: We did that song at my house. Kurupt had brough Method Man and Redman over to my house. And Inspectah Deck was on the song too. He was at the end - "I.N.S., the rebel..." Just his voice. They had taken his voice. They had taken his verse out and kept the background 'cause it sounded good. It WASN'T originally Tupac's song. I had transferred it at Dr. Dre's house and had left it out there. [Tupac was] flossing like, "I got a beat with Method man, Redman. Dre made it." That's what Dr. Dre told 2pac. That's how the whole fued started between Dre and 'Pac. 'Cause I happened to be walking by the studio like, "That's my beat. I did that." Tupac [was] like, "That's your stuff?" From that situation, that's when he and Dre started fueding. Dr. Dre was taking credit and wasn't doing nothing, wasn't coming around.

Kurupt: The original record was me, Rage, Redman, Method Man and Daz. I told Daz, "Man, this is the one, we need to drop this, we need to put this on Dogg Food." 'Cause we did it when we was making Dogg Food. When 'Pac came home, we put it up for 'Pac, like "You want this record?" 'Pac was like "Hell, yeah, I want that record!" And he dropped his verse where Rage's was, 'cause Rage said she'd put her verse on something else, and that's how that record made it on 'Pac's album. Me, Method Man and Redman and Daz and Rage - that was the original record, and Inspectah Deck was on it at the end. That's him you hear at the end: "Wish... this...bliss..." That's inspectah Deck. I went and picked up Red and Meth and Deck personally and took them to Daz's house. We knocked the record off in about three, four hours. It was a done deal, and then we... we didn't use it, 'cause Daz wasn't feeling like mixing it and doing all that. We end up taking it to 'Pac when 'Pac came 'cause Suge was like, "When it's time to work on a project, everybody needs to give everything to whoever's project it is."

I was talking about the original track with Deck and Rage.
