Nas and his Pops perform on VH1
« on: October 12, 2004, 06:53:57 PM »
I just flipped it over to VH1 cause they were doing a tribute to the old school (Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, KRS...).  Anyways Nas and Olu (his dad) just did "Bridge the Gap" and that shit was so damn tight! Olu was chillin on a bar stool, playin his mute trumpet (used his hand as the mute btw) He starts singin the beginning, and then Nas comes out, and just rips it.  Now i've heard that song 3 times, and its officially grown on me.

On another note, last week VH1 did a 5 part series (1 hour each) on the different chapters of rap.  Anyways, they dedicated one whole show to NWA/ Chronic era.  The next one was all about biggie and pac.  Anyways it was a GREAT show, i'll holla if i find out when they are gonna replay. (Damn i gotta quit watchin VH1 - startin to show my age) Peace

Hey they're replaying it right now. Nas performs in about 20 minutes. Oh shit and at the end, nas comes out wearin a rag, has a tupac shirt on, and does keep your head.  They did a real nice tribute to Pac.  Pac's sister was there to represent him, i've never seen her before.  She actually has a nice set of titties 8).  But check out Nas and Olu - it was tight. Peace

I thought Nas's dad was dead. At least in a couple of songs Nas mentioned he died in a robbery or something. Maybe I'm missing something there.

I did watch the special. It was tight. It damn near moved me to tears, seriously.

Quote
Aiyyo, it's packed on this Riker's bus
The tightest cuffs is holdin' me shackled
The life of a thug caught in the devil's lasso
On the streets I was invincible
Cowards would duck at a glimpse if they knew
What my pistol would do, a fuckin' killa
Mother's a dopefiend embarrassin' me
All in front of my friends
In the street smile with no teeth
I never knew daddy, heard he had a 72 caddy
Died in a robbery, can't remember him, was probably 3

Why didn't my folks just die in this society
Why wasn't I a child of a doctor, who left stocks for me
Two little brothers, two sisters, them shorties gots to eat
Mother's a junkie, she twisted, so all they got is me
I'm the provider, with goals to do much better than my father
Whether through drugs sold, or holdin' revolvers
Blurry visions of dad holdin' me high
It comes to me slowly, the words he would cry

("My Country", Stillmatic)

that shit always confused me too, but he contradicted it in his music, too

Quote
So many kids I knew, never knew who Pop was
That's why I show my pop love
Cuz he was still around when I popped up
He could have left
My moms pregnant shook to death but stayed

Watch me crawl till I took my first step, to the first grade
To my first fist fight
Right behind me he would stand
No matter how big or tall he made me fight you like a man
Throw dirt in your eye, swing my right scoop your ass and slam
He watched me so I wouldn't get jumped by shorty's fam
Roaches and weed all over my crib him and moms relaxing
Next thing you know he packing
So then I asked him
What's this white shit on that plate that you facing?
Papa why you butt ass from the waist
And who's this lady I'm facing
Dark skin you're not my mommy
He grabbed me up to run some smooth words by me
Promise things that he would buy me
If I kept my mouth close and don't tell mommy
He said one day I'll understand little me
Was in you to side me

("Poppa Was A Player", Lost Tapes...and lol at me havin to edit about 8 mistakes in one verse from ohhla)

so i don't know what he intended with that first verse above, but it's fiction (especially since "Poppa Was A Player" is definitely true shit)...maybe something metaphorical, it is kinda weird tho

"Bridging The Gap" is def one of this year's tightest songs. I would've loved to see this performance, anyways i can't wait for his album to drop

I feel you man I was the same way.  When I first heard that song I knew it was gonna be one of those that would take me a couple times to really appreciate.  But seeing him and his dad perform was awesome.  Nas is gonna drop album of the year 8)
