Midway announces Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks

Publisher expands fighting franchise with new action adventure, due in 2005; plans annual Mortal Kombat releases.

Today, Midway announced some major changes to the Mortal Kombat franchise. The first was the unveiling of the next game in the series, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Unlike regular Mortal Kombat games, Shaolin Monks will be an action adventure title that allows players to explore a world beyond the arena of death. The game is currently in development for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 and is slated for a fall 2005 release.


The other big change to the Mortal Kombat series is its frequency. In a statement, Midway president David F. Zucker said a new game in the franchise would arrive each year. “Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is also our first step toward delivering something that Mortal Kombat fans have been calling for: a new game set in the Mortal Kombat universe every year," he said. "We are planning our Mortal Kombat release schedule with the expectation that we will deliver a new Mortal Kombat title annually.”

This game looks fantastic, but I just hope they maintain the high quality we've came to expect from Midway, and don't water the games down trying to fit into some deadline.  "Deadly Alliance" had moves cut out because of a deadline, and saying "a new game every year" sounds like some crazy deadlines.

I just know an old-ass Mortal Kombat from like more than 5 years ago. That was fucking sick. FATALITY!! FINISH HIM!! lol, is it still as NC-17 sicko sicko brutal as hell as ever since? :D

this is great news , I grew up on Mortal Kombat as i couldn't have been older than 6-7 when I got into that game .... ah yes the words finish him , flawless victory , FATALITY and "you weak pathetic fool" all remind me of childhood memorys  ... god bless mortal kombat

those games did suck but they should be better since Midway has improved their games lately

Ive been a huge mortal kombat fan since mk1 ...im defintely gonna get this game. I actaully got a burnt copy of it but it turned out 2 b a fake...it was the fuckin orginal mortal kombat (mk1) :scarface:

^actually in a collectors edition version of the game out right now, they include MK1 arcade version
