I am a long time lurker of dubcnn and i have a couple of questions. I pretty much strictly listen to leftcoast rap so maybe this explains my question, but what exactly is a mixtape?

I thought they were DJs and artists taking old beats or other people's beats and rapping over them, but when I go to some of these websites that sell them they often have like greatest hits discs for Pac, NWA etc., are these legal?

Also why are cats from the west not putting out more mixtapes? It seems like there is a real distain for them, especially in the bay. For example in the new Frontline single they compare mixtapes to the compilation explosion of the late 90s. It seems people like Game and Lil Flip basically made their name through mixtapes and seems like some cats from the bay could do the same.

I personally would love to hear more mixtapes from the bay. Bay artists are always complaining how they dont get national exposure and dont get to work with huge producers, well they should jack their beats and selll that shit. That "Tyming" track they play on KMEL is a good example. that grinding beat is different that what is usually heard from the bay, and Richie Rich's flow on that was simply insane. ("legend in 2 games, weed plus coke and ...")

I would love to hear more bay cats laying some sick beats over some commercial bullshit.

also for those that like mixtapes what websites do you reccommend for mixtapes from the bay? I just bought that new OUtlaws/Pac mixtape from mixunit but I havent gotten it yet.

the mixtape scene has always been big in the east but the last few years it has come over here west

everyone drops mixtapes now in days, especially out here in the west
