Disses started in the early seventies on WAX?
« on: December 28, 2004, 09:34:52 AM »
The first diss ever recorded that got a response on wax was Neil Young Southern Man to Lynyrd Synyrd. Lynyrd Skynyrd responded with Sweet Home Alabama.

" Southern man                       Lynyrd Synyrd responded with
better keep your head              "Well I heard mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down
Southern man                        Well I hope Neil Young will remember
better keep your head               A southern man don't need him around anyhow"
Don't forget
what your good book said
Southern change
gonna come at last
Now your crosses
are burning fast
Southern man"

Does anyone recall any disses on wax before 1973?

Young wrote and recorded Southern Man but I don't think it was aimed at Skynard. It was just a lashing out at the South mentality. Young soon after recorded Alabama (no one ever seems to mention this song when they talk about the beef). Ronnie Van Zandt took offense to Young's negative view of the South and lashed back using "southern man" in the lyric, and "Alabama" in the title to create Sweet Home Alabama. All three were truly great songs.
