How expensive is college in the USA?

Hm the last couple posts motivate me again :D
It will take me some time to finish here though... 2006 I come to Cali, see how I like it and then Im going to decide what to do.. or how early do you usually have to apply? Maybe I have to apply several months in advance or something ???
I finish school here May 2006.
