why is there this notion of being gangsta being such a great thing to be?

the product-of-your-environment stuff has some truth to it, and i even understand the bragging and boasting about it in the social context of the music/artists, but sometimes i find it sad how people with no relation to it at all start such discussions. Don't get me wrong, i'm not preaching or condemning artists who digest the circumstances they grew up under in that way, but why is a bunch of to a considerable extent white kids who are prolly mostly middle-class and far from ghetto discussing this shit like this? just asking myself
