Has Gangsta Rap Reached The Overkill Point?
« on: January 23, 2005, 08:56:48 AM »
I ask because when most heads think of West Coast hip-hop they think Gangsta rap is the only thing the West has going for it when it's a million diffrent styles to choose from, like Paris is political, and so on. I hate when peeps feel like if nothing from the West isn't gangsta heads ain't gonna pay attention, every motherfucker in Cali ain't bangin.

I don't think that Gangsta Rap will ever reach the "overkill-status"...people have always liked violence, and it won't change.
Why you think Game's so popular...'cause his album is good? Yeah, but also because he has a big mouth & likes to talk about gangsta shit...and that's what the people want.

And you gotta give the people what they want...

Gangsta rap will never go away. Rappers are always trying to find a way to reinvent it or enhance it. But it ain't going anywhere. Dre tried to completely get away from 'gangsta rap' after he left Death Row. Obviously that didn't work out, so he made "2001".

it's at a strange point... people like nelly, ja rule and chingy can talk about being gangsta and sell millions but you get a real gangsta from the east, south or west and they can't get a record deal  ???

Oh definitely. There's really no difference between Nelly and Game talking gangsta shit. Both of em live in condos and mansions up in nice places. I guess people realized that the shit just ain't legit anymore.

But above all of that, people are getting tired of hearing negativity. There's enough int he world as it is. People want club and party tracks, which is why gangsta rap is in a slump.

alot of club tracks aren't even positive... some of the lil jon shit is about fighting and stealing bitches and fucking people up...

honestly gangsta rap just doesn't make any sense at all anymore, it's not stories of survival anymore it's just stories about fucking killing everyone and beating the shit out of people if they bump into you.

it used to be a ghetto commentary now it's a fucking gay action movie

For real...when you would listen to Ice Cube, Scarface, 2pac or even some of Mobb Deep's early stuff, there was meaning behind it. They would tell the stories but it would have a perspective behind it, if that makes sense. I guess there was kind of an underpinning of conciousness behind it. I still enjoy the gratuitous aspect of some of it, I definitely enjoy the Eastsidaz and shit like that. However when you hear Busta Rhymes and Xzibit rap about how they're going to shoot people on that one song on Xzibit's album, you realize how ridiculous it can get sometimes.
Being a LAKER is a privilige. Unfortunately some "Lakers" have forgotten that.

I just chalk it up to everyone being lazy. Instead of putting out meaningful material, all rappers follow the same formula...."whatever sells the album". If it isn't related to sex or violence, no label execs have faith in the product. It's turned into a fucked up business.

I  don't think gangster rap have reached the "overkill" point at all. I do believe it "recycles" itself among young people and i will tell you why. When i was 18 i was listening to NWA, Ice-T,Ice Cube,Boo-Yaa Tribe, and Spice 1, just to name a few. Now that i'm older i listen to music from the likes of Eric Clapton,Train,Maroon 5,The Eagles, and Jimmy Cliff.
I still listen to gangster rap, but doesn't appeal to me as much nowadays. Now i got this 18 year old kid at work asking me this.....

"Hey, i got the new 'Pac and Game cd, and i think Yukmouth is underrated, what do you think?"

I don't think you're going to be listening to gangster rap in your mid 60's eating oatmeal and drinking prune juice.
