FEAR AND LOATHING

Remember when 9th Wonder was something that you studied in history class, a splash was something made in a pool, and North Carolina was known best in hip-hop for throwback Michael Jordan jerseys? Flash forward to now and N.C. is literally running parts of the hip-hop scene right now, as Little Brother (Pooh, Phonte, and 9th Wonder) are signed to a major and groups like Justus League are carrying the torch for down South underground music. That said, just having released their North Carolina compilation CD, Definition. The Hip-Hop Compilation, Neblina Records hits 2005 running with the release of their Fear & Loathing Mixtape, compiled by DJ Resident, a Raleigh, N.C. resident himself.

"The mixtape scene is flooded with the same material, same sound, same concept, all just packaged up differently," DJ Resident revealed in a statement. "No wonder they say the competition is crazy. Everyone is selling the same product. So many cats are on the same vibe. I know people want more than just that narrow spectrum of music."

While hosted by DJ Resident and playing off the concept of the movie of the same name, Fear & Loathing is set to feature guest appearances from Splash (whose solo album drops this week on HHS, featuring 9th Wonder production), K-Hill, Supastition, Chapter 13, and more. hey, sorry i didnt get back sooner...

anyway, i havent really had a good chance to listen and absorb the album properly yet, but i did have it on after i downloaded it and it had my head nodding from front to back, which is definitely a good sign...

everything i've heard from Chapter 13 and Manov War so far has been tight, the tracks on here are no different...Audio Visual Ill Shit is exactly that loll...i'll be sure to get this burned and into the cd player pretty soon...

another solid release, keep up the good work man...

This is a very dope record. So far I've been very impressed with everything Neblina has done. They put out a very dope K-Hill 12" last year, and they follow that up with this. DJ Resident does a dope job mixing the mixtape. Manov War does a dope job opening up the mixtape with "The Fuel Up." Storm the Unpredictable and Priest da Nomad hold it down as usual. Supastition and Soulstice come through for some dope tracks as well. The K-Hill "Diesel (Remix)" is dope as shit. If you want some fresh music, cop this. You may not recognize all the names, but wouldn't you rather be put on to new music than hear the same ol' Papoose freestyle?
