Basically America owned about 80% of Cuba's land before Castro came to power and nationalized the countries resources.  Because he decided to put the interests of his own people ahead of America's interests in his country, America has been after him ever since (Kennedy ordered an assasination attempt against Castro).  But Castro remains defiant, and now in this instance he is protecting an American (Assata Shakur) from facing injustice in her own country.
