Game interview from Murderdog

Has your lifestyle been pretty hectic since you been in The Game?
Not bad, not bad at all! It is actually a little bit lighter than what I’m used to.
How did it make you feel to do all those numbers in the first week of sales with Documentary?
I was ecstatic more so for the fans than for myself. I thought it was great, but I wasn’t so gassed. I’m not like your ordinary rap cat and I just learned how to rap about four years ago. I taught myself how to rap a little bit short of four years ago and I have just been running with it ever since. I take the bitter with the sweet and I definitely was excited about it and everything when the sound scan came back the first week, but I didn’t have no big head about it though. At the end of the day I just want to make some good music and that is it. That is the only thing that matters. If the fans receive me well like they did on the first album with every album then I guess that maybe I will be more psyched about it one the second album than I was on the first. The first time really I am just happy to be out, because it has been a long time coming.
How did you teach yourself how to rap?
What these new cats don’t know is they don’t know how to pay homage to the niggaz that did it way before them. You got to study all the classics because that is what scientists and doctors do. That is also what pro athletes do! Everybody looks at and studies the people that did it before them because you always want to elevate your game. You have to take a little bit from the old school and that is what I did. I was always a hip hop fan. I was listening to Snoop heavy, The Chronic, Death Certificate, Reasonable Doubt, Ready To Die, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, you name it. Not only was I listening to all of them, but I was really listening! I was even reading between the lines and all of that! After a couple of months I just got good with this shit and ran with it.
No one besides Bone and Yella really repped Eazy hard until you came out. Is that important to you?
To me it is real important, because I feel like I owe him that. I also think in the order and fashion that Eazy-E died with the HIV virus, people stray away from talking about it. We are so scared to bring that up. A lot of people don’t give him the props that Eazy deserves for that simple fact right there. I’m calling for the NWA Resurrection, and now that Lil’ Eazy got a deal over at Virgin they are doing some things.
Will you work with Lil’ Eazy?
I’m looking forward to having a hand in that project as well as The D.O.C and hopefully see his career send off. I definitely think that growing up in the NWA melting pot, which is Compton, and being a kid listening to all those records and now being signed to Dr. Dre’s label kind of let the NWA legacy live on through myself. It always will at least while I’m in this rap shit. I think the people really need to remember who brought that NWA feel back. Not nobody since Bone was reppin’ Eazy. I did that and brought that back and I think that needs to be recognized, because there is a lot of people out there hating on me. They are hating on me for the shit that I do, but at the end of the day I resurrected the West Coast, I resurrected NWA and I did it myself.
Why do think they are hating on you?
I really don’t know, but yesterday was a monumental day for the resurrection of the West Coast hip hop scene. We had a Western conference!
Tell me more about that?
It was a Western Peace conference and I think we had over 60 rappers there. I even forgot that we had all of those rappers in LA. It was all called by Snoop Dogg. It was everybody from me and Lil’ Eazy to The D.O.C, King Tee, Mack-10, WC, Snoop, Lady Of Rage, Kurupt and Daz back together again, Kam, Crooked I, Eastwood, Steve Harvey, Minister Tony from the LA Nation Of Islam, Mac Mall and a gang of muthafuckaz in there! The Doggy’s Angels were there and Warren-G…I don’t want to leave anybody out.
Were there a lot of artists from The Bay?
There was a lot of Bay Area cats and California was all in there. Like I said there was over 60 or 70 rappers there. I forgot that the West Coast even had that many rappers; it was crazy.
Was Spice-1 there?
Spice-1 wasn’t there, but Suga Free was there, DJ Quik was there. It was a gang of muthafuckaz there. I really couldn’t believe it! Xzibit was there and I’m going to probably keep saying the names during the interview.
What was the atmosphere like at the conference?
The atmosphere was crazy! I’m a fan of hip hop and I have always been a fan of hip hop and I’m from the West Coast, so to see that with my own eyes knowing that I have only been rapping for about four years. I don’t have the same love for the art that they do which is people that grew up wanting to be hip hop artists. I’m now starting to develop this thing we call hip hop. Just being in that atmosphere with all of these legends and up and coming artists, and the new dudes holding it down\.
What were you doing before you were rappin?
Selling crack!
Was rap a way to get away from selling crack?
I wasn’t looking for a way out, because I just stumbled into a way out. I was pretty content with what I was doing. It lead me down the wrong road and I ended up taking a couple of bullets, but it didn’t just make me want to change my life that drastically. I woke up out the coma and was like "Uh, I’mma do it this way."
How long were you in a coma for?
I was in a coma for about a day and a half, so it was not like I was in a coma for six months or nothing, but I don’t think it is any different though because a coma is a coma! Whether it is for a day or for two years it don’t matter! I done had a son and everything since that, so god is good!
Are you religious at all?
Naw, I ain’t too religious! I have not been to church since I was probably about two years old. I definitely believe in god and I haven’t forgot how to get on my knees and say prayers. I definitely know you don’t have to get on your knees to pray! You can pray standing up, while you’re pissing, while you are driving and doing anything because god hears you all of the time. I know there is a god and I believe in him and that is the only thing that counts. I don’t need to send myself to church, bible study and read the scriptures, but I am pretty much content with the way that I live my lifestyle and I keep god first at all times. That is my way outlook on it!
Did having a kid change your life?
My son is the fuel and motivation for everything that I have done and everything that I will do in this hip hop game. Without him there is no Game, there is no 4 times platinum after three months, there is no documentary, no mix tapes and there is no interviews with Scott and Murder Dog covers or none of this at all. My son is really the fuel for all of that, and he will be.
How old is he?
He is almost two years old right now and everytime I look into his eyes—he can’t really talk but he tells me things like "Get yo ass out there and get that money." I’m gonna always hold it down for him. The crazy part about it is I know his character already. I can see what kind of kid he is going to be. It is kind of crazy for a dad to say about his son, but I got one bad fuckin kid, I’m telling you.
What do you mean?
He doesn’t listen to shit, he throws shit, he hits people and I’m trying to get him out of that. I think it is because I’m on the road so much and he spends a lot of time at home with his mom. We gonna get it together though. He’s in the terrible twos!
When he grows up would you be happy with whatever he becomes?
Hell yeah! My son can be anything from a soccer player to a janitor if that is what he wants to do. My expectations are a little bit higher and I think by the time he graduates from high school I would have worked hard enough for him to explore any option that he wants. My album came out two months ago and I was a millionaire before my shit even dropped. I was on the cover of Vibe before my shit dropped, so I have been getting my shit on the low. My thing with this hip hop shit is the first thing I set out to do was make some good music and the second thing was to secure my family financially. I think the second thing is the most important thing to me and I will do it by any means. I’m not falling or taking no losses because I have a family to feed.
The Documentary has been doing real good, but what is next in your plan?
Album number two, but actually me and Snoop are starting our West Coast tour today. We are getting on the busses and we are going to Utah tomorrow man. We are on tour for about two months. The tour is called "How the West Was Won". We are about to really get it on.
I know you tour a lot and go out of the country, what is that like?
I never thought a nigga, a drug dealer from Compton, would be all over Europe and all the way through Canada and doing all of this music shit. It is crazy to see different people, different cultures and different lifestyles. There are people that are living totally different from me and are mesmerized by myself. When the gangsta rapper The Game is in Paris, it fucks ’em up! That shit is crazy to me! It is crazy how people live so different across the world. If you don’t get to see those things then you don’t get to appreciate life at it’s full potential.
How do the people react to you in the crowd in Germany or somewhere like that?
They look at me like I’m a fuckin’ rap god or something! You would never fuckin’ believe it! I’m getting praised like that before they even knew the words to my song. You gotta have an album so they can study and listen and really get comfortable and know the words so they can spit it back to you at the concerts.
Do you have any cats signed to your label?
I am working with some cats, but I wont name no names right now. My label is the Black Wall Street, so be looking for that sometime in the near future. It will most likely be going through After Math/Interscope. We are going to be holding it down.
When will your 2nd album come out?
It will come out around the same time next year. I’m gonna drop 5 albums in 5 years and then I’m getting the fuck out of here and you can have it, Scott.
Why only five?
I’m going at 30 when I’m still young. I giving them 5 for 5 then I’m toast! Toast to the king! I’m gone! My son will be up there a little bit and I want to enjoy life. I don’t want to quit this shit when I’m 38 and then be on my death bed. Fuck that man! I’m out at 30!
What will the fans be able to expect on the shit in the future from you?
On my new shit expect a more raw talented Game than the first time. This time I am mad as a muthafucka! The 2nd album I’m getting in asses, all the way in asses. The first time I played it cool because I wanted the people to know my story and hear my pain. I just had my son and this time my son is two and he is eating well. I know you have been hearing about the drama and I’m gonna address everything on this album. I’m fuckin’ niggaz up because they are going to have to learn to respect me. I’m no fuckin’ punk!
Will you go in the same direction as far as production?
As far as production I’m going with Dr. Dre and everything, after that it’s whoever. If you start doing a beat, Scott, I will make your shit hot.
In the beginning what was it like to get with Aftermath?
It was a dream come true for me. I was a kid in the fuckin’ candy store. Even to this day I still don’t know how to act when I’m around Dre. You look at that nigga and you say to yourself, "That’s Dr. muthafuckin’ Dre, are you serious? I’m in here with Dre!" I’m still mesmerized everytime I’m in the studio with that dude. That is a guy who has been in the game 20 plus years and everything he touches turns to gold. Look at Eminem: 15 times platinum. 50 Cent: 10 times platinum. Snoop Dogg: 6 times platinum. The Game: 4 times platinum after three months. You have to give it up to that dude, because at the end of the day that is the best producer in hip hop ever. He is still consistent with it after all these years. He can make a beat standing backwards at the mp, that niggaz can't fuck with. That is Dr. Dre!
Do you watch closely when he produces?
Hell yeah and I’m starting to do tracks too. I will probably have a track on my next album, watch it!
Overall what have you learned from Dre?
I learned how to be rich as a muthafucka and to tell everybody to suck your dick, that is what I have learned from Dre.
Do you get a lot of cats wanting to work with you right now?
Everybody is calling, but I can only do one record at a time.
Can you name a few upcoming albums you will be featured on?
I’m on Busta’s shit and he is next. His album is the next out of our camp. I will also be on the Detox album. I have already been on numerous albums like Young Buck, Lloyd Banks, 50 Cent and I will be popping up in the future on a lot of shit because I am the new face of hip hop. Hate it or love it, the underdog is on top.
How do you pick and choose who you work with?
It depends on what is not gonna tear up my character and what I’m trying to do. Also what is not gonna tear me down as an artist with people I can work with and still maintain the title "Gangsta Rapper".
Is that title important to you?
That is a title that I am never trying to leave, because that is what I am and where I come from and that is what I will breathe.
Gangsta rap died down for awhile! Don’t you think it is good to see it come back?
It is definitely good to see it and I appreciate it coming back. That is what me and Snoop is doing on this US tour. We are showing them how the West was won with gangsta rap!
A lot of people say Ice-T gave birth to it and some say Eazy and NWA did, but who do you think?
New York is the Mecca of hip hop, so let’s get one thing straight, I give them that. New York is the Mecca of hop hop bottom line! I fuck with New York and they fuck with me! We got love in New York and we all love good music, but Gangsta Rap started in the West Coast and NWA did that. I think that gangsta rap is modern day rap. I think everybody needs to give the West Coast a little more praise and give Eazy-E a little more praise. That is the Godfather of Gangsta Rap! They started this gangsta shit and this is the muthafuckin’ thanks we get. This is the modern day rap because everybody is talking about what they are doing in the streets with this and that and telling their story. It’s all about crack and drugs. I’m not saying we are glorifying it, but we are just telling our story.
What is your favorite Eazy-E track of all time?
"We Want Eazy"! That was Eazy telling you that you want Eazy. It made you believe that you wanted Eazy and sold that shit to you. That is my shit right there! "Imma hip hop thugsta I use to be a hustler." Eazy was it for me.
Was he really represented at the conference?
I wasn’t gonna leave that muthafucka without having Eazy’s name being brought up. Fo’ damn sho’! Eazy-e lives on through me and his son was there! That shit was big! If you would’ve seen that shit you would’ve been amazed. I don’t know if that shit will ever happen again, but I’m damn sho’ glad that it did happen yesterday.
Do you think if the West gets on the level of ATL and really comes together they can take over?
It’s not really about taking over the game, it’s just about being at a competitive level where we are all equal. East Coast, West Coast and the South! I don’t think nobody has to be on top or bottom, I just think that once we are all as powerful as we can be hip hop will be as strong as it will ever be in life.
Does the city of Compton stand behind you?
Compton loves me. I'm the muthafuckin ambassador of Compton. I’m still in the hood and they can’t fuck with me! I’m probably one of the only rappers that can still be in the hood comfortably.
My old peers are still with me, I roll 40 deep.
Are there any other rappers in Compton that you know of that are getting ready to jump in the Game?
You already know about Lil’ E. All you need to worry about is Lil’ E because he is coming.
Do you ever want to do movies, like so many rappers are getting into nowadays?
I’m working on some movies and I already shot a movie called The Millionaire Boys Club. I’m pretty sure you have seen The Wire and are familiar with Omar which is Mike Williams from The Wire. That is my co-star in my movie and it is a real hood movie. It is going to be a dope movie, so be looking for that probably later on this year, or early next year.
Did you write the scrip for the movie?
No I didn’t write the movie, I’m the lead actor and it’s my movie. That was some shit that me and my manager put up some dough and shot to get it in the can because we knew muthafuckaz was gonna come asking. We knew it was worth a lot more to us because we already shot it. I’m looking to do some big films with some big companies so we are taking a lot of calls and we will see what it turns out to be in the end.
Are you a big fan of films?
Yeah and since I know you are gonna ask, my favorite movie is Menace II Society.
How in the fuck do you find time for everything?
There is not enough time for everything and that is why I can’t get paid the way I’m trying to get paid. If there was two of me I swear to god I would be rich as a muthafucka right now, but there is only one. Everyday I gotta do it deal by deal and I can’t get fucked in 2005.
What are your off days like? Do you have any of those anymore?
I don’t have no off days! My off days are going to the studio or taking meetings. That is an off day for me. Every day is a full schedule and that is how it is. I’m young and I got to get it now so I can retire one day and just kick my feet up on the muthafuckin’ beach with some naked bitches and just say "Hey, I did it!"
Are you at your highest level, or do you think you can top your recent success?
Hell naw, on the next album that I drop I’m trying to sell a million in the first week. I have to get higher than this! It ain’t nothing but elevation for me! I’m gonna keep climbing that mountain until I can’t climb no more. This mountain that I am on don’t have no peek either!
Besides G-Unit, are you gonna have a group of your own?
Naw, I ain’t in G-Unit man; you better get that right! They kicked me out of G-Unit. I got kicked out!
I thought everything died down and was cool with ya’ll?
No, we just squashed the differences, but that don’t mean that I’m back in The Beatles. I gotta keep on moving! I’m definitely the most popular out of the Beatles though! I’m John Lennon and they can’ t stop me by any means necessary. My imprint is the Black Wall Street. It’s the Game, as a matter of fact I’m taking the t-h-e off of the Game so just call me "Arrogame".
Will you and 50 ever be able to make tracks again together like "How We Do"?
I don’t know what the future holds but right now, no! That was a great track. Appreciate his help and all the things he helped me do and I learned some things from him and he learned some things from me. We parted ways and it is just like that sometimes! I’m Ice Cube in NWA right now! Whether it is John Lennon and the Beatles or Ice Cube and NWA!
