As far as hip hop goes, the last two albums that meant anything to me - and I mean really moved me, provided a real soundtrack to my life, not just bumping beats) - are

Quik's 'Rhythm-al-ism'
Outkast's 'ATLiens'

For non-hip hop:

James Taylor 'Hourglass' (THE most beautiful music I have ever heard, full stop)

Daft Punk 'Discovery' (a soundtrack to my days at uni; to be played loudly while drinking before hitting the club)

there have been many pretty good albums, such as Dre's 2001 compilation, RAW, Rythm-al-ism, NL Top Dogg, UTEOT, Stillmatic, etc.  But the last "great" album I've heard was Makaveli.  That album covered basically every aspect of the spectrum, from battle tracks to thought provoking tracks to even a party jam (Toss It up).  This album flowed together because there were limited producers and limited guest appearances, and overall, the album just flowed smoothly from one song to the next.  It wasn't overrun with hundreds of guest artists and 65 producers, and didn't have a horrific sounding first single just meant to sound pop to get more sales (i.e. "Hot in Herre", "Snoop Dogg", "Without me", "The Real Slim Shady", etc.).

OH SNAP, I forgot all about Dungeon Family. That is highly underrated too. As a matter of fact, I haven't even heard anyone on this forum mention that album other than you.

Props

2001 was the last great album alot of people have heard in here huh, your obviously not listening to much shit because since 2001 there's been a GRIP of great albums released. Check it:

Talib Kweli & Hi Tek - Train Of Thought
Sticky Fingaz - Black Trash....
Warren G - Return Of The Regulator
Chico & Coolwadda - Wild 'N Tha West
Dungeon Family - Even In Darkness
Nas - Stillmatic
Eminem - The Eminem Show
Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow
D.I.T.C - D.I.T.C
Alicia Keys - Keys In A Minor
Truth Hurts - Truthfully Speaking

There's more too, you just need to realise that not many albums are gonna come close to topping 2001, the only person who can prolly top it is Dre himself....

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.
